Tranny gear oil

I pout gl5 in the tranny it calls for gl4. Is this bad?

It will be fine

GL 5 has slightly better protection than GL 4. In fact most shops dont carry GL 4 any more. I believe the differenace was that GL 5 used to have sulfur in it to help cope with high loads of stress. All new GL 5 oils no longer have sulfur which makes it safe for all trannys

From my understanding, the synchros in DSM transmissions don't like GL5 fluid. GL5 is more slippery then GL4 and will be hell on the synchros.

Transfer cases can take GL5.

Back in 2002, I put GL5 fluid my AWD trans and within a few months, 2nd gear was notchy and hard to line up the synchros. I switched back to a GL4 tranny fluid and was able to get into 2nd gear and baby the transmission another year.

I would say 1G trannys would like GL4 better but most cars including DSM never seem to have trouble with GL 5. It is always best to put what the dealer recomends-but for all my transmissions I always use redline, GM syncro, royal purple, or penziol syncro. Since you only do it 15-30k miles why not put some good stuff in?

I wasn't aware that our cars used a Getrag drivetrain. That is most interesting.

Mybe Ill see if I can get my hands on some Synchromesh localy and give that a shot.

It will be the first and only Penzoil that is allowed in my car.

Two years ago at the recommendation of my transmission shop I put 15w40 or 50 Mobil one synthetic engine oil in my non turbo transmission. I have had absolutely no problems at all. I can't recommend anyone else trying as I don't know the status of each and every transmission. I can only say after 2 years I have had no problems. As a by product, my trans shifts easier during cold weather. I would be interested in knowing if anyone else has tried Mobil 1.
