ok, i actally bought the laser rs for $600, and its in really good condition. it has a small crack in the radiator but ill fix that tomarrow. i jumped it and it wont hold a charge worth #### so it has a bad alternator i think, but what ever. anyways heres the big problem, its an automatic (and i hate it bad) and it would drive fine till i got to 35mph, then it would go out of gear like its missing one or something. but when i got home, my friend and i drove it and it didnt do it anymore. sooo?

and another thing, besides the sound system, which is bomb, the car is stock and the boost gage goes up to 14psi and it maxed out, is that good/bad? normal? it really surprised me, the turbo is as wide as a CD.

To address your tranny problem, check your trans. computer. Mine did the exact same thing until it went out. It's called "limp mode" and it sucks LoL.

Before you replace the alternator, be sure and check all the wiring for corrosion, loose ends, etc., you might lug the battery down to the local Autozoo and have them test it for you.

Lastly, yes, it's normal to show 14 lbs. on the stock boost gauge....it means nothing. IIRC, the stock boost gauge is showing the ECU'S best guess at what kind of PSI you're motor is actually seeing.

Good luck and congrats on the buy :thumb:

my tranny has a computer?? where do i find this? LOL

it was a brand new battery, but i dont know, ill look around

and i herd DSMs need special batteries, is that ture?

and there is another prob. there is a loose belt or something and it squeeks hella loud. i can fix it, i just thought id share that cus i was driving around (12am) and my neighbors are all pissed and i couldnt help but smile. DSM pride right there

1.The transmission computer is located behind the main ECU which is behind/underneath the radio.

2.Brand new doesn't always mean good, worth a shot even if it's unlikely

3.Never heard of special batteries...a specific size, perhaps, but nothing with a diamond star on them LoL

4. Pissing off the neighbors with belt squeak = :notgood:
Pissing off the neighbors with sound of a turbo flowing more air than a 747 = :thumb:

ok. so is there a screen on this computer or what. and then what do i do with it? . and my ECU is hanging down under ther glove box looks like someone had a go at it. i thought it was a PS2 at first :(

and "4. Pissing off the neighbors with belt squeak =
Pissing off the neighbors with sound of a turbo flowing more air than a 747 = ""

i like the way you think. that would be alot more fun than blasting techno.

and i went to fix my radiator, and the tube that comes off the radiator that the radiator hose goes on broke off (the car was sitting for the last 3 years. and another thing- there is this little black box with a :dsm: on it and it has 2 little tubes coming off of it (and no its not the MAF), and one goes to the air can, well that broke also...is it important? LOL is it the psi gauge maybe???

and another thing (last one promise) the last owner had this thing added to the car so you can start the car from the outside (remote ing.) could this have something to do with the battery dying?

well sir you have many questions, but all will be answered im sure....firstly im pretty damn positive theres no screen on the computer...EVER...and to answer another one of your questions about the remote start, yes that can drain the battery...

heres a story, i had remote start on my winter car (dur) and sometimes depending on how good your remote starter system is, say you bump the starter, the car may start and run, or it may not start, but if the car wont start the remote starter will continually try to start, thus wearing down the battery, happened to me a couple if times...sucks...

but yeah that could be something that is draining your battery, try it a few times and see if it doesnt start and trys to restart over and over...and over agian...good luck...:thumb:

If the belt is too loose, it won't spin the alternator enough to actually charge the battery.

I was driving home from work one night, and my light kept getting dimmer and dimmer......belt wasn't squealing. Car finally dies. Thought the alt was toast. It was pouring out and i had no tools with me....big NO NO owning a DSM...LOL

So my gf picks me up. The next morning I go back to the car and find the belt is VERY loose. Keeping my fingers crossed, I tightened the belt and jump started it. purred like a kitten, and never has a problem again.

Moral of the story.......TIGHTEN YOUR BELT!!! LOL

ok sounds good. well, i can say i know alot abot cars for my age, but when it comes to actally doing something hands-on, i have never done anything. i found the alternator, doesnt look to easy to get up in there. well what im trying to say is how do i do this.

and i want to put in a high flow K&N filter. what is the proper way to do this? do i unbolt the air can or do i slide out the part with the filter?

i found this tube that comes off the BOV and i took it off and now i can hear my turbo. is this ok to do?

Get a Haynes or Chilton manual. And learn to use the search feature of this forum. I'll bet you get your answer (and many more) from the manual.

My K&N kit came with instructions that tell you how to remove the old filter and MAS and install the new filter on the MAS. Don't know if the 1g model is the same. Again, the search feature is your friend.

i found this tube that comes off the BOV and i took it off and now i can hear my turbo. is this ok to do?

No. There are two "tubes": a vaccuum line and a recirculation tube. The vaccuum line tells the BOV when to open, so removing this disables the BOV and causes your turbo to surge (very bad). The recirc tube is how the BOV recirculates post-turbo air back into the intake pipe. Taking this off dumps metered air (air the ECU has measured and thinks it needs to add fuel to), so you don't want to do this. Read the FAQ on this site about venting your BOV.

ok so i take it im going to have to buy a MAFT. ill have to save up some money.

ya i hope so. it kept kicking out of gear again today. and the car dies if i try to let it idle sometimes. my friend said its cus the throttle adjustment screw is missing. and i cant get in there to tighten my alternator, its too small of a space. i think im going to have to take it to a shop
