Ok guys im doing the 6 bolt swap on my 95 gst, found a great deal on a complete 6 bolt....but before I even start the swap I want to make sure the engine is in good condition. I searched but didn't come up with any results, Is it possible to do a compression test when an engine isn't in the car? The complete engine is sitting in my garage and the cranks turns and everything looks good...but just want to make sure the internals are good.....
Thanks for the help!

im not sure on how this will work on this type of motor since im kinda new to dsms but its the same concept. on v8s we would put them on a stand and put a starter on them and do the test that way. but i havnt delt with motors like these befor out of the car compression testing.

I did some reading about the leak down test....and it seems that it will only tell you if anything is wrong with the head/valves. Am i wrong?

Yep you sure can. The tranny has to be bolted on and the starter bolted to the tranny. Supply power to the B+ terminal of the starter from a battery with large gauge wire and ground the batter. Take a small 10 gauge wire and connect it to the battery. Connect a SEPERATE wire to the starter solenoid. Then connect both wires to a push button. Push the button and the starter will spin.

Be careful that the engine braced pretty well. you don't want it flopping around like a fish.

Ok, with all that said. It would be better to do what Defiant said.

What will a leak down test help me to test....just the head and valves?

Ok got you. So it will tell me if I need pistons or bent valves etc
