Bad Turbo?

I have a 1997 gst with the stock turbo 5 speed manual, yesterday when i was driving i was in first and after it got up to maybe 2-3000 rpm it kinda put put and I shifted to second and still did the same thing and it does that every time any ideas? I think I might need a new turbo or is it a boost leak?

I don't understand the "put put". Also, is the car boosting normally? Perform a boost leak test, to be sure.

ok sorry for being kinda vague, but after about 2-3000 rpm it just lags and the turbo doesnt seem to boost, how do i make a boost tester or where can I buy one to test it?

Still too vague.....

Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge and boost controller?

Does the car feel like it's lagging or is it reading so on boost gauge?

Let's start here and then try to further diagnosis.

ya i have an aftermarket boost gauge i havent driven it in two days im gonna take it for a spin later and see what it boosts at, i know i have it set at 8 psi but when i was driving it the other day it didnt boost up to 5 but im going to take it for a spin tonight to see exactly where it boosts

also im going to try to go to the hardware store and try to get the parts to make a boost tester

a datalogger is a very useful tool in these situations.

also is is smoking ? and how does the exhaust smell and what color it the smoke if there is any?
