I recently purchased a 91 AWD talon with the trans in pieces. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=272125

Long story short the car had a dead battery and was towed by its front wheels :(. The car was taken to a trans shop where it sat for a few months. Some work was done on it (flywheel machined) but i'm not sure what else. It only had 105k easy miles on it so it's supposedly fairly nice (internals do look nice). I guess it just needs a viscous drive and whatever else connects the front drivetrain to the rear, and the typical synchro and bearing kit just because we're already in it. So i'm going to have a friend who owns a tranny shop give me a quote, but just in case it's a bit too much i'm not opposed to buying another that's complete ready to bolt in and doing the installation myself. So what are my options?

I don't need anything crazy, but I am aiming for 13's initially and possibly 12's later. I hear the stock clutch is kinda marginal so I guess i'll be looking for an aftermarket one. Any suggestions on the clutch? The shep reman stage 1 is kinda pricey at 1k... Are there any other trans' out there?

The Centerforce Dual Friction (CFDF) combined with a Fidanza flywheel have been wonderful for me, on the clutch front. Not great for back-to-back drag racing runs (should let it cool down for about 15 minutes between runs if you're launching it properly, to avoid trashing it), but they shine in road racing and autocross, as well as SoCal stop-and-go traffic with their minimal pedal effort. Nice easy slip for taking off from red lights, and they hold a crap-ton of power.

Honestly, a grand isn't bad for a fully remanufactured tranny. Check out how much a new one from Mitsu would cost, and be prepared to drop a cinderblock.

Heres the problem. What broke? Towing the car in such a matter causes stress on the ENTIRE drivetrain from the rear hubs to the transmission and EVERYTHING in between. Towing a car as such, puts the liability on the tow truck driver. So he should be paying for all of the damages.

He did... In the other thread I mentioned the car was brought to a trans shop where it sat until the insurance paid up (tow company insurance). The trans shop was cut a check for the storage fees and the owner was paid for the trans damage. He was happy with the money out of the deal so he gave the car to his brother who then decided to sell it.
