Removed transaxle cover, and problem?

So I removed my transaxle cover to tighten the 36mm bolts to make my shifter stop moving, and think I have a problem. When I removed the cover the gold ring gear and metal clip/washer from the top set of gears came off with the cover. The metal ring clip is all bent and warped too. Do I need to replace the clip? Also, how does it go on? I wasn't able to see it because it fell off right away, and my manual doesn't show it either.

Also, I tightened the upper gears without a problem, but when I tried to tighten the lower ones, the gears and the next cover start to come off the transaxle so I can't tighten it. The vfaq didn't have any of these problems so what can I do?

That ring is supposed to be 'bent'. It is called a wave spring. This is from the VFAQ and should help you put the ring back in:

I had to do this job twice due to me not putting in the *wave spring* correctly when assembling them back. The *wave spring* is located inside the cover on top spindle, when you look at it, there're 2 *pointy* thingy sticking out, make sure to have those inside the *cut out section* of the circular ring it rests on.

It really seems to only fit in correctly one way so just try and put it in a few different ways until you figure out the right way. It took me a while to figure it out but then it just clicked in the one time.

Cool thanks, that should help. But what about not being able to tighten the bottom gears without the whole thing coming off the transaxle? Since that seal is now broken, I probably should put some rtv on it, but can I take that whole assembly off? Is that hte same sprocket that the clutch release fork and TOB are on? I just got my tranny back in and don't want to have to drop it again!

I looked through the rebuild vfaq about the tansaxle, and it looks like the VC should keep the top layer against the inside gears. I still don't now why the whole "top layer" keeps lifting off when I try to torque the bottom 36mm nut instead of it actually torquing down. I loosened the nut a little but can't tighten it now. Any help?

Well, I guess I won't be able to tighten the lower nut, but I guess it's fine. Now, since the "top layer" of the gears started to come away from the main part of the transmission, could I have hurt anything in there? It only cracked open on the bottom 1/4" max. Should I be ok if I just put it all back together without redoing the RTV on that layer? Or should I follow the first part of the rebuild instructions to remove the VC and those gears to remove that 2nd cover and re-RTV it? I don't know a lot about this tranny and don't want to hurt anything, it ran good before!

Well I put everything back together, and tried to clean and add some RTV through the 3mm crack the developed between the cover that separates 5th gear the 1-4. Then it started leaking at that cover. I took it apart again and tried to put it together one more time with RTV, and tried to get it around the bolt holes with a toothpick the best I could, but it still leaks. I torqued the bolts to 30ft/lbs because I couldn't find any specs in my manual. Can I go tighter? It seems the only way to fix this would be to pull the tranny again and do a 1/2 rebuild. Is that necessary?

If you're talking about the bolts that hold on the transaxle end cover (the one you take off to fix the shifter movement), the torque specs for them are 14 ft./lbs.

Do you think you could take some pictures of what you're trying to describe in your last post about leaking and the crack(s)? It would make it easier to help out.

It backed off the main assembly when I was tightening the 36mm nut the first time. The bottom made a crack about 3mm big and the top stayed pretty much touching.

Ya, I definitely didn't take that cover off (just the one in the pic from the vfaq). I'm not sure what to tell you.

No I didn't take the cover off. ^ that is not my pic, it is from the rebuild vfaq. I am just saying, thatis the cover that pulled away from the main gear box, even though my VC, 5th gear, etc are still all attached. Now since it broke the seal, it leaks.
