HI I am thinking about buying a Mitsubishi brand big 16g for very cheap under 100, The issue is that the guy is saying that the turbo is leaking oil into the intercooler. This would make sence to me but there is zero shaft play I have checked. Is this possible? what seal would leak with no shaft play into the intercooler? Is this a turbo problem or is he mistakenlt blaming the turbo for an engine problem? also this turb has a very very small chip on the exhaust side of the wheel. Is this an issue?

$100 All i can say is you get what you pay for. As for the leak, one of the seals have to be leaking. Looking at a rebuilt turbo, which costs you $300 if you dont do it yourself. And if the chip is big enough you will need a new wheel as well.

A seal holds the liquid in one area (usually).

Shaft play doesn't have to be present because of a bad seal. Just means the oil is either passing through the seals which would lead to smoking under boost. Which I doubt this is the issue here, sounds like a PCV issue if it's being found in the intake side.

As far as the chipped exhaust wheel have you heard the turbo boosting on a car?

Does it have a whine to it?

Below is a pic to give you an idea of what is going on inside a turbocharger.

You should investigate the PCV reason for the oil. If thats the case, you could be getting a good deal. Look for oil/dirt on the compressor wheel or just before it. That should be clean on a newer turbo with a good pcv system.

Are you going to push enough air through you engine to warrant the extra exhaust flow throw a clipped turbo? Its really only a plus if you top out your turbo flow and are holding your engine back from reaching its top, top rpm range. You can think of it as a move in turbo performance up the rpm scale. Comes on a little later and holds power further into red line.

Do you have the cash to get yourself a new full price turbo? If so, do you really want the headache; or is this an upgrade of convince? Is it an upgrade of necessity?

How well do you know the seller? Can you believe a word he says? Would he be dumb enough to misdiagnose the issue, yet know turbo's enough to have one clipped? Did he clip it himself?? Ether way theres a good chance its priced appropriately. Unless he bot it used and clipped (you don't want to be 3rd)

Is he close; would he let you run it BEFORE YOU PAY HIM?
Ask yourself these.
