No Boost?

I recently installed a new fmic and now I have no boost. When I tested the car it got to 5psi or so and there was a loud pop then a puff of black smoke. It then wouldn't boost, I have the waste gate tapped into the intake pipe, I tested the flap the waste agate is hooked up to by removing it and holding it closed, since usually when you rev it you can create a pound or so of boost even without driving, that did nothing. I think it might be the bov, could it be doing this if the bov was stuck open? Would I get no boost at all, do I need to hook my waste gate actuator into my j-pipe also? I also checked for boost leaks and I found none at all. The car currently drives fine, it just doesn't make any boost at all, it is slow and sad, any help would be great.
 
Boost leak test. Boost leak test. Say it with me, boost leak test.
 
Okay, even if I have some boost leak, I would still be able to build some boost, I am not able to build any at all. I have had holes in connectors before and I was still able to boost, just not as well until I fixed them. I also did look at the turbo and there is no shaft play or anything and it spins fine. I don't know why the car would run fine and just not build any boost it is like the waste gate is stuck open but I don't know, I need more information than check for a boost leak, I am not that new. I do thank you for your comments, please keep them coming. I also don't have a any boost controller hooked up, I have had the waste gate actuator hooked to the j-pipe and the intake before without a mbc and did not have these problems. But now I only have the waste gate actuator hooked up to the intake. I was also wondering, could it be the bov, I have it recirculating.

It can't build boost if a coupler came off, or if there is a big enough leak. Do the boost leak test then get back to us.
 
1. If you're not that new, why did you hook up your wastegate to your intake pipe? Do you not know that your intake pipe does not see pressure which means your wastegate will never open, let's hope you haven't killed your turbo yet by over boosting it.

2. If you're not that new, why did you go boosting without completing your FMIC install which should end with a thorough boost leak test?

3. If you're not that new, why do you not know that "pop and black smoke" most likely means that one of your IC couplers have undone itself leading to no boost. You would hope that this is the case which will save your turbo and motor because you've hooked up your boost source incorrectly.

The prosecution rests. :p
 
Ok 1. where should I hook it up to, do I need to tap a nipple into my j-pipe, shouldn't the wastegate open at 15psi stock?
2. I did the test earlier and I can't find any leaks, but I can do it again.
3. I don't think anything is hurt, I haven't ran any really high boost, the boost wasn't very high at all when it made that pop and the car was warmed up. I have had piping come off before and this seemed like the same sound, but I can't find a leak.

I'm not new, but I don't know everything yet, this is the first time I have done anything like a fmic so cut me a little slack we all have to start somewhere. You guys don't have to jump on my back I just need some help, I don't need criticism. I am sorry if I offended the DSM gods but I am trying to learn.

Correct.

shouldn't the wastegate open at 15psi stock?
Nope, only if it's hooked up to a boost source, you're basically running with the wastegate open to atmosphere by tapping it into your intake pipe, which produces infinite boost.

I'm not new, but I don't know everything yet, this is the first time I have done anything like a fmic so cut me a little slack we all have to start somewhere. No one is jumping on your back, we were trying to help you and you got defensive. Yes we all had to start somewhere but the best way to learn is to be humble. ;) Now go and perform that thorough boost leak test, connect your wastegate to your J-pipe and post back what you find. Good luck.
 
Well guys, I wish I could do all that you recommend but I had to go back to college :(, I miss my DSM. At least I have a backup car, in a few weeks or so I will return home but it isn't a short drive so I can't just go there all the time. I will let you all know what happends, thank you for your help.
 
Make sure you check the bends right on the sides of the intercooler. There the easiest to miss but yet they pop off too. I had one blow on me the other day- sounded like my car blew up and had the same problem your having. Guess a boost leak test would show this though eh? :)
