hey i just got my 1992 talon about a month ago and its totally different then my last car which was a 1993 lt1 trans am

so now my question is my car has a 2.5" turboback exhaust on it, and an act 2600 clutch and thats it, so in 2 weeks im ordering a hard pipe intake, K&N Air filter, Mechanical boost controller, boost gauge, and i have already done all the maintance changed all the spark plugs and wires and all the fluids and starting to mod now, ok so now after me ordering all this and what the car already has on how much boost should i run do u think i could get by safely with 15 psi?

and also my other question is what other mods can i do to make it a lil fats like bolt ons and such, i now in december or january im going to get a big 16 and all the the supporting mods for it but until then what bolt ons will help me, and ons i wont need to change with ther new turbo.

thanxs

If you want to mod your car you need to start with a way to tune it. At the bare minimum to start you need to get a logger so you can see what is going on when you turn up the boost. Even better since you plan on more mods you should get a wideband O2 as well.

With that said you should be able to run 15psi but without logging, wideband, EGT,..... something to see what is going on you are treading on thin ice playing with the boost at all.

As far as future mods check out the upgrade paths in the tech section.

www.vfaq.com has a pretty good upgrade path to follow. You definitely will need a tuning device of some sort and if you plan on running the 16g you might as well grab the SAFC and a Logger. Make sure your timing belt and everything has been changed, you don't want to end up replacing a motor down the road. If you plan on running more boost your going to need several items..along with some good tuning. Fuel pump, injectors, fpr, etc... welcome aboard! If you're not a mechanic now you soon will be.

ok thanxs guys, i live in bridgeport illinois and i dont now where i could get my car tuned anywhere near here, and is it hard to use the logger and all of that and how much do those usually run

Use the tech articles following the upgrade path. Do as much reading as possible there is tons of useful articles on this forum. Everyone has their opinions on parts and brands and what parts to buy. Use the search button it is your friend. Also when it comes to replacing broken or worn parts use OEM. Good luck hope you enjoy the car.

Also the stock injectors and fuel pump can take 15-16psi but make sure you install the after market boost gauge first as the oem is not accurate. Also make sure you install that mbc the right way.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome to DSMTuners. Before you get too far into the site, allow me to remind you of the spelling, capitalization, grammar, and punctuation rules. It's not that we're that picky; we just like posts to be clear, concise, and completely understandable so there's no confusion about somebody's question or somebody's answer. That said:

1. Install your boost gauge as soon as possible. Then do a proper boost leak test. http://www.vfaq.com has an excellent guide on how to make a boost leak tester and how to perform the test. You'll find that the VFAQ site has the answers to quite a few of the basic questions and modifications.

2. Once you're sure that you have no boost leaks, on a stock fuel system and a 14b, you could probably get by with running 14-ish psi. To be sure, get a logger and monitor knock. As long as your A/F ratios are fine and you're not seeing knock, you should be fine to play around with boost a bit, but it's generally agreed upon that the bare minimum supporting mods necessary to really play with boost is a 190lph fuel pump. From there, all you need is larger fuel injectors and you should be set for a while. The old formula for a 16g is "190lph/550cc/16g/SAFC2".

3. So, with that last part, you need to pick something to control the fuel. SAFC's work well up to a certain size injector, and that size is arguable, but generally, it's not wise to go above 650's otherwise you start messing with timing. DSMLink is the next step up, and it's MILES beyond the SAFC, but still very user-friendly. The DSMLink website can give you more information: www.dsmlink.com

4. DSMTuners has a decent upgrade path, as well as those found on RRE's website, the VFAQ, and others. http://www.dsmtuners.com/sub.php?page=1gtupgrades

Good luck, and keep us posted on your project.

ok thanxs guys im gonna order the boost gauge, hard pipe,(and for the intake pipe i will need a 2 and 3 quarter in pipe right and like a 2.75" K&N air filter, and a mechanical boost controller, do u think with these mods i will be able to keep up with a stock lt1?

We don't do bench racing here. Every car is different. Every modification is different. You might be a horrible driver. There is NO way to tell what any one car with any one driver might do with a given set of modifications.

I'll remind you again to please correct your grammar, capitalization and punctuation. Thank you.

Yeah I second the logger, better to know what's going on in there then go in blind. Since you have a 1g you can get a set up fairly cheap. I believe I payed $30 for my palm and made my own cable - which was less then $15. There is a write up on here on making your own cable if you can use a soldering iron you can handle it. The MMCD (logger program) website has a list of compatible palm pilots with it as well so you know which to choose.

hey guys got one more question for you, ok im going to order a 2 3/4" intake pipe so what size K&N air filter will i need?

On a turbo DSM using the stock MAS/MAF, the intake pipe size has nothing to do with the size of the filter, as you'll be using an adapter for the MAS. Most aftermarket cone air filters use a 3" inlet, though some use a 4". Pick whichever works for you.

I would worry about doing a boost leak test first. As soon as you install these bolt-on's, make sure you find all leaky spots in the intercooler piping and anywhere else.
Heres a good link from a great fellow member:thumb:

Make sure you have a logger like the previous gentlemen advised and run low boost until you can get a great tune. Moderators I dont mean to be publicizing but i noticed our new member wants to know where he can get a tune.
I would like to say you are lucky to be living in Illinois because AMS builds some of the fastest DSM's around. Im not sure how far you are from west Chicago but you can call them or look at amsperformance.com
Good luck :thumb:

i think my MAS has been hacked now, its got an old K&N filter and a snorckle pipe, i think its all be hacked oof already the only thing the pipe has any hoses that are connected to anything is the BOV hose and thats it

For tuning, if you can go to AMS Peformance. They do a good job with DSMs and Evos, my ex-girlfriend got her car tuned and worked on down there. As for more boost, some might disagree and some will agree. Put on a Mitsubishi multi-layer head gasket and ARP headstuds. I did that along with the basics (full exhaust, MBC set to 16, K&N, and hacked MAF), and walked my ex's stock Evo IX in the higher speeds. :talon:
But as some people say, you could follow the "Tech/DIY" guide for performance, that is what I followed pretty much. Good luck!

ok hey thanxs guys im having a blast with this car, i like this car a million times better than my LT1. Ok last night i took offf my filter and i have an old K&N Air filter and i have what looks like to be the stock intake and it has a big wire right under the filter and two little wires right beside each other, ok my question is if i get a new hard intake will it hurt me or help me or should i just keep my stock one and get a new filter? also if i get a new intake i will loose the MAF correct, could u guys send me some links or suggest which intake i get thanxs

There are intakes on the market that still allow you to attach the MAS with a coupler followed by the open filter. The intakes should have 3 nipples on them to attach hoses coming from the pcv on the valve cover, and the other coming from the charcoal canister from the firewall.
As for the 3rd its coming from your Boost coontrol solenoid.

You will notice a significant difference in the meantime, and you can kind of hear the turbo when it is spooling.
Im not sure what 3 wires your talking about ??

slowboyracing, dsmparts, amsperformance, etc. great vendors at the top of my head that have what yoou desire man. There are also many vendors that post on the front page of this forum, you can take their links and scour through their catalog.

all the ones i c only have the BOV tube but on mine it has two lines right by each other and then there is a another line by that, that i think is attached to the MAF, but in all those pictures i cant see if it has the other 3 lines that i need
