Hey all,

There is a picture of my new car. It was built by a friend of mine before he blew the headgasket and sold it to me for very cheap. Im a mechanic, so I know automotive stuff pretty good :thumb:

I know the engine is no good as this headgasket problem has been a constant ... and 3rd and 5th sychros grind .. SOOO

I bought and have a JDM engine and tranny sitting on the floor of the shop.
I'm sure there are lots of " what do I do now " Threads ...but Im looking for straight forward answers.
The Car:
1994 Laser AWD Turbo

What I have in Mods.
Evo III Big 16G turbo
Header
550 injectors
FMIC

I have all winter... so Im not in a rush to put this back together .... Tell me if Im on the right track ...

Im going to take the head off the JDM engine. Get it plained, valves checked etc ...What aftermarket HG do people use? What Aftermarket Timing Belt do people use? What boost can a stock 1g 6 bolt take with that turbo before it becomes iffy?

What should be used for ECU control? I have an ECU out of a 1990 with a prom socket already ... should I use it?

What "Stage" of clutch is needed to take whatever this engine can produce .. I have been reading alot of 300WHP numbers ...

Anyway .. Im sure Im going to get alot of replys about how this topic is done over and over ... but anyone that feels like helping, is AWSOME !.

The final drive on your tranny will be different. You will need to source a JDM rear end (or the one with the correct ratio for your tranny). Otherwise the front wheels will be spinning at a different speed than the rears, and you will kill the viscous coupler.

I am not much help on the rest, sorry.

Tear off the wing, taillights, body kit.

Stick with a stock Mits MLS head gasket.

Use an OEM timing belt.

Most 6 bolts can take ~400hp with a good tune.

Use DSMlink for tuning if you can afford it. Or check out dsmap.
The 90 ecu is an EPROM that will be ready for DSMlink or dsmap.

Your clutch will depend on the torque produced. ACT 2600 is rated about ~400 ft lbs. You should be safe with an ACT 2100 or silmilar.

Good luck.

Why take off the wing and body kit ?? Other then you dont like it .. and it adds weight.

The rear end in the laser is different then one from a JDM?

I have a 1990 Talon AWD parts car .. is the rear end right in that one?

Does the 1990 ECU need any re-wiring compared to the 1994?

The engine should be exactly the same as the stock assuming it came from the same vehicle. Be sure that you have a 4g63t and it'll take a LOT of punishment. With extensive supporting mods and stock internals you could reach nearly 600 whp.

You will be able to push as much boost with stock internals as that turbo can give with little difficulty. Consider getting an aftermarket head gasket (cometic is very common) and more fuel delivery if you want to extend the boost a great deal. You will want to modify your intake (maf setup, IC piping, and intercooler) and exhaust (3" turbo-back) to extend your boost, but the internals will still be able to easily handle up to about 40lbs or so - just don't overrun your injectors.

Check out the parts catalog from this site to review some of the dsm specific items out there.

If you have the cash, get a wideband O2 and a logger before doing a great deal of mods. Then use the eprom to tune the car. Be sure you know what you are doing and that you have all the gear/loggers/gages to tell you what the engine is doing.

As far as clutches and trans go, stage 1 will take you into the 300's, depending on your driving style.

awsome ... thank you..

Im all concerned about the final drive.. rear diff now ha ha .. I have done some reading .. and I dont understand all the engine tranny codes ...

The JDM engine/tranny I have is from a similar year Mits Cyclone. Does that match up or will the gear ratio be off? And if so, can I use the front diff out of my US transmission on the JDM?

Invest in a S-AFC or something of the sort to tune with.
I personally like the ricer look. All I can say is WELCOME to the DSM world, and expect flaming for the body kit, spoiler etc.

Its a look ... not everybodies type of car . .but whatever ... still looks alright .. Im going to paint it silver this winter... I dont like the orange that much...

I have a S-ARF... I didnt add it to my list .. sorry .....

Thanx for the welcome !

I have had my car for some time painted lime green and after the fast and the furious came out everyone was like "why did you paint your car like the fast and furious". Well did anyone ever think maybe they painted the fast and the furious car to look like mine. Anyway some time ago I warped the head on my 7 bolt and took someone else advice and sent it into the local engine reman "motorworks". They had a good speil and got $3000 of my hard earned bucks. Well long story short after about 2000 miles and 2 clutches I found out about crankwalking. After that I was frustrated and let it set for 3-4 years. I reciently bought a 90 gsx with 90k and pulled the motor. Here is what I have learned. If you pull the head put a cometic headgasket and arp headstuds. Since you have the head off put in new valve seals and third gen lifters too. Buy oem parts wherever possible and if you skimp on a complete gasket set make sure you get metal intake, exhaust, and turbo gaskets. Get a oem new oil pump and front case. Only use oem timing components and replace the timing belt, idler pully, tensioner pulley, and hydraulic tensioner. Eliminate the balance shafts or get a new oem belt and tensioner. Dont forget the new oem waterpump. Port and polish everything as it is free and will help support future mods. And one last thing dont forget the maintenace stuff like new belts, hoses, plugs, wires, etc. Hope this helps Russ

Thank you ...

Does anyone know about the tranny final gear stuff ?

I cant find like a chart of final drive/rear ends to what car ratios etc ...HELP :-(

If the JDM engine came from the same vehicle, your final gears will be the same. If the 4g63 came from an EVO III, you will have a larger final gear, which is great for daily drivers. If you got a 4g63 from one of the other models (non-dsm), then I don't know what your gears will look like.
I think they included the 4g63 in some minivans that have really low gear ratios for the increased weight, but the final gear is the opposite for freeway driving.

I know there are several sites that include their personal gears and the possible combinations of dsm and evo gears. If you have a manual, just drive it and see what it feels like. If you don't like the way it shifts or any of the pulls, get it swapped.
There's no real way to tell what the ratios are unless you take it to a tranny shop and have them dismantle the whole thing (or do it yourself).
