So I was driving yesterday and the engine was making a fairly loud ticking noise between 2k-3k RPM only under cruse (not accelleration/ decelleration) and at all engine temps. i was limping it home, got off the freeway and the engine died. then i cranked it and the starter could barly turn it over then it stopped alltogether (the starter was straining). After about a minute it started again and I got it home.

Then I pulled the valve over/ cams and everything looks ok, the valves feel fine. Could It be lifters this bad? Im going to do a leakdown test next to check for bad valves, any other idea's?

Thanks

HMM, i had a problem like that, but it didnt stall or shut off and definetly was still able to start it again. Kinda sounds like lifers but it shouldnt screw up anything like that. Thats kind of a weird issue.

Could you hear where the ticking was exactly coming from? Top of the motor, bottom end? Also, when it started back up was it sluggish and still making the same noise? In my honest opinion I would pull the oil pan to look for small metal shavings in the oil. Possible spun bearing...

drain the oil and look for shavings... you probably spun a bearing... but there is a BIG difference in sound between rod knock and lifter ticking...

If its the lifter(s) getting stuck, that would make your motor hard to turn over and die because the valves arent opening right.. check it, cause you might bend a valve..

Rod knock is all the time.. it doesnt really come and go at different rpms... it should be bad, and then worse throughout the RPMs...

Check the oil and pan.. no metal=good.. then go to the head.. get yourself a bottle of Marvel Mystery Fluid and put that in the oil with a fresh oil change.. it will 60% of the time if you catch it early enough fix stuck lifters....

Ticking lifter can be read by the knock sensor as knock and the ecu will pull timing. While this alone will not cause it to die. Needing a tune up, boost leak, vacume leak, etc can. Also a piston tapping a valve lightly will cause a "tick".
