I cant pass smog because my Evo III 16g. What should I do? They say they need a sticker. Everything else passes. Im in Cali by the way. Any ideas? I have to get it done by the 4th of October or Ill owe like 600 dollars!!!!!!

Do you have to go to a smog only station? First time I've heard of the smog place flagging a 16g. Why not try a smog test at a different place? What "sticker" are they asking for? Never heard of that before...I don't recall having a sticker for the stock turbo. Maybe try swapping the T25 back in and re-test if you can't go to a different smog station. Try posting your question in the Norcal or Socal regional discussion boards.

jibberishballr - I had this happen a few years ago in San Diego. I had my car taken to a test only station and they saw my turbo and refered me to the state ref. They basically called them up and told on me.

So, I went to the ref and they didn't say a damn thing about my turbo. However, they took a look at my greddy type S bov and greddy intercooler and said that was not legal.

But, any bov that is not adjustable is smog legal.

If I were you, I would take my car to a different place. If they ask you a question about your turbo, tell them that it is a mitsubishi stock replacement turbo.

Show then a diagram of this in the manual and they should let you pass.

Sounds like the stock turbo is the only way they will let you pass. They see the 16g install kit and that flags them right there. Do you have the stock side mount intercooler still on or a front mount?

seems like your failing the visual inspection, did they actually run your car for emissions? I had the same problem, but since I paid I had them run the test for emissions and I failed that too. So I got the 300 dollar smog check, works all the time everytime!

For what he's got he shouldn't need the magic smog. He doesn't have that many radical mods. I know quite a few smog places that should pass him. It just depends on the area. I know most places in San Diego are pretty strict. It just depends on where you go and how modded your car "looks".

agreed, but I'm just saying 300 dollars isn't too much to pay for the hassle IMO, especially considering he has electronics

I did the 300 dollar thing for my last two smogs and I got pretty sick of it. I plan to smog my car as is(on profile) and not pay more than the $60 fee. There are a few things you can do that will allow you to pass with some decent mods. For instance, I know I can pass with my exhaust setup because it has an OBDII cat (epa and carb certified) and I know it won't be too loud. This is a full 3" turbo back exhaust. I know a former state ref that does smog test at a local gas station and him and I talked it over.

Take a look at this http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235463 .

It talks about different turbos that we can use in socal that have good power potential and could still pass smog. There are many point of views on there about many different issues or ideas.

what are you guys doing? Failing with basic bolt ons.

I'm in cali too and many of us nor cal guys pass no problem with much more extreme setups.

Just do a search on "smog" and look for the threads that are in the northern california section.

I've passed with a b16g, and then again with my current pte 50 trim. I've also passed with a 6 bolt swap and another big16g. All cars had 3" turboback with high flow cat, one was awd, another was fwd. So yes the FWD had to go on the dyno, and that was the one with the 6 bolt swap, still passed no problem. Other mods along with it, was full ic piping, 720cc injectors, walboro 190, etc. The AWD same thing, super huge fmic (ssac), bov, filter, 3.5" intake pipe, etc.

Your failing visual, which means, your smog tech that you went to doesn't like you, is an asshole, or both. Go somewhere else.

BTW, all I listed, we didn't do any under the table hookup, just your standard smog fees.

hopwoodp, you however were put in a situation none of us wants to go through, you go to regular test only smog, and the tech there reports you and you HAVE to go to state ref. OUCH.

On that note, if your reffed, your pretty much screwed unless you put your car to stock or just about stock.

Again just do a search for "smog" titles only, and look at the threads made under the cali sections.

Here is a recent thread on the norcal forums, about carb numbers, and some good info about intercoolers shouldn't be a problem":

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=254459

To sum it up again, if you know you can pass the actual test, just find a shop that don't make a big deal about visual.

Damn you live in chico? Im sure theres some chill guy there that will pass yor visual. I used to live up there and my buddy does still i dont know if youve seen him. he drives a huge lifted blue and silver silverado with 40's on 22's. Anyways i will talk to him and see if he knows someone that can pass you.

Thanks for jumping in on this one. I actually failed the state ref inspection but, it didn't matter. I am not on the test only list yet. My friend was taking care of my car while I was over seas and I got back right after and had to deal with it. He thought because it was a 95' that it was test only.

The funny thing about the smog guy was, he didn't give a damn what turbo I had on the car. I even asked him after I failed. He said, as long as it doesn't look like it belongs on a
truck I should be fine. Although, there are a few places that can get very stupid about it and either try to bust you or in most cases have you come back and spend some more dough.

Well Im gonna take it to a different place to get it smogged. I need to get my registration done. Ive been pulled over for it 3 times in two weeks (2 in 3 days). Its ridiculous. My car looks stock exterior-wise, and the only noticable things when you look at the engine would be the boost controller, the air filter, and the 1g bov (which is a stock mitsubishi part anyways). I am not gonna get it reffed from what ive heard here and from my friend who had to go through all that crap. I got an extension till the 25th of October and need to get a temp sticker for registration at DMV. Ill update you guys on how it goes. Oh! Also listen to what the cop says when I got pulled over the second time. He goes " you werent revving your car very loud, rpms were kinda low, you up to something...its way too suspicious." LOL Isnt that a joke?

Oh and as for the results of the rest of the smog (other than the turbo):
Passed everything

I would definitely go to a different smog shop.

I had some newbie smog tech in San Ramon fail me visually. He claims my stock manifold is an illegal header. He said nothing about the hardpipes, ssqv, evo3 16g or my fmic. I even asked him and he said those mods were okay but the header had to go. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I felt like calling the B.A.R. on him for incompetence. I just walked away and went to a different place who passed me straight up.

SoCal smognazis seem to be a lot more retentive than NorCal ones. Around here, some will even look up the injector color code to make sure it's a stock part. Though I haven't had one blink twice at my B16G. :D Thank little bunnies for identical compressor housings.

Just find young asian guys... :)

My tech guy just glanced at my engine bay and didn't say a damn thing. He gave me props on my FMIC and told me immediately he wasnt sure if I was going to pass the sniffer

My initial test I failed since my HC was a little off.

Free re-test, so I just changed all my fluids, plugs, wires, and I passed at the max limits. This is with the stock turbo btw.

Tech just wanted my business. Young techs and specifically gas stations are more lenient on visual. You do gotta understand from their perspective is that if they get caught not conducting the full inspection they will lose their license.

The mbc will fail you on inspection, loose it for the hour it takes to smog the car then put it back on after. I passed with a SCM6152 so you should be fine on a 16g. If you want to come to Santa Rosa I can point you to a guy that is not big on the visual stuff, but do yourself a favor and loose the mbc.

I dont understand why we cant pass here in california with a FMIC, my car comes with one stock, so i put a bigger stock part on and its illegal? so if i take off my stock airbox and put a cone filter on it its not legal? (sarcasim) Any adjustable BOV or one that vents to the atmostphere is illegal of course. But why? What is so bad about being able to adjust the spring rate on my bov. i have a GReddy S and had to ref my car and put a 1st gen bov on to pass. i passed barley: 91 points i think. 3" turbo back w/ cat. But a adjustable bov on a stock setup wont do anything and if its recirculated why is it illegal?

Well I took it to another place and they told me that I was fine with the turbo and hed pass me if i took off my hard uicp. So Im gonna do that or find one that is carb legal for next time...if there is such a thing. So I'll pass next time after the uicp is switched out. I might have to get a stock one from the classifieds because I dont remember where I put my stock one.

I painted my pipes flat black. That's what seems to be recommended to everyone with this type of situation and it seems to work. But, no one can promise you that. Its just a step you got to take on your own.
