ok i am hopefully picking up a 92 tsi awd and the harmonic balancer seperated from it's self is this safe to drive to my house which is 10 to 15 minutes away

Correct. Long as you dont wait for it to warm up etc. Just hop in see oil pressure and drive normal shouldn't be a problem. But if you notice the temp guage getting close to the middle (which is not hot yet) do your self a favor and just pull over and shut it down, pop the hood and let it cool for 10min. And continue.

Remember it's NOT even close to overheating in the middle of the temp guage, infact thats the area of normal operating temp. But you want to avoid it going any higher.

Then get yourself a nice Fluidamper harmonic balancer and you wont ever have to replace it again.

ok the guy is including one with the car which i am going to replace as soon as i get it to my friends garage or in my garage i have the chilton book to help my get threw it.

You wont even need the book.
1 Jack the car up
2 Remove Drivers front wheel
3 Remove belts
4 Remove the 4 12mm bolts leave the large center bolt in place
5 Pull the pulley off ( you mat need to gently caress it with a small hammer)
6 Installation is the reverse of the above 5 steps:thumb:

If it was me getting this car I would have it hauled on a roll back. It will be cheaper in the long run than if you tear something else up trying to get it home to fix it.

Don't drive the car at all before you replace it. Mine came apart on me and it slung my belts off, stopping the water pump, alternator and power steering all at once. That's not a nice surprise when you're trying to muscle the steering wheel through a corner, then being stopped in traffic watching your temp creep dangerously high as you try to pull into the nearest parking lot.

One bit of advise when replacing it: DO NOT lay under the pulley when tapping it with a hammer and screwdriver to get it off. It is heavy, and when it falls unexpectedly, it will split your upper lip wide open right under your nose. Don't ask, just trust me on this one!

I would just pull the pulley off in his driveway. It may take an hour, but as long as you have your trusty 12mm, I think thats all you'll need. Well, maybe a 12 socket and a 12 wrench!

Bahahahaha this happened to me too!! Hammered it going around a corner and BOOM the crank pulley split it 2 pieces. Was not fun and stopped like 2 inches in front of a pole. OMG

I agree get one of those one piece crank pullies. You will never have to touch it again. With some you will need smaller belts.

I would do it in his driveway also, just make sure you get the proper belts for the wp to alt., and power steering. and might as well get the a.c. while your at it. If your confident working on cars, and know what your doing, replacing the pulley and belts should be a 20 min. job at most. But i've done it many times.

car has no a/c its coming with a stock one and im just going to throw that on drive to my friend who has an unorthodox racing crank pulley give him the money for it and throw it on there.

There are of discussions on this site about those kind of crank pulleys. Some say they promote crankwalk, i had one on my car for almost a year with no noticable ill effects. However, I went back to my stock pulley when i started making more power. i would suggest researching to come up with your own conclusion about wether to use it or not.

unless your revving to the moon, you don't need an expensive balancer.
Something wrong with all your shift keys? :)

You're right, who needs a dampener when you have a broken crank. http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184691

Stick with the OEM harmonic balancer, replacing it from time to time is part of doing DSM business, that or go with a $300 Fluiddamper piece.

I agree with oldman, the OEM piece works fine and my first one lasted over 100k miles with no problems...plus it's free, and that's always good.

I dont know how old this post is but ill dig it up. My lower pulley at the crank is wobleing like a Bich*
I think its called the harmonic balancer. Im starting to think this is the reason for the Vibrating when id give the car some gas. Cus yesterday i started it up and heard clack clack clack. I knew what it was right away, shuved a light under the car and saw that thing just wobleing like a woodn wagon wheel.

This the cause for the Vibrating
