I own a 95 Eagle Talon Tsi Awd, it has 109,xxx on the motor. i bought from a friends friend for $400":D i basiclly stole it from him. He tells me the motor is bad. Well i get the car to my house start messing with it put a battery in it and to my suprise the damn thing crank. Roughly two mins after a rough idle it starts to clear up. Out of no where there is this loud god forbidden tapping coming from what sounds like under my valve cover...so i take it off thinking it was a collapsed lifter or something but it wasnt and it only got louder. This is where its throwing me for a loop, i got my buddy to hop in it and give it some gas to about 2,000 rpm it starts to clear up.Once it hits 2,300-2,600 it comes back with avengance but the tapping isnt consistent at all it chages up with the rpm's.Im lost so any input you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated....

jared,

yea, i meant to add something to it but pushed the button before i had a chance, sorry. but when i pulled off the valve cover it sounded like it was coming below the head. people just scare the hell out of me with "crankwalk" did know if it could be a possibilty

it's a bad lifter check to see if it has the updated bigger hole lifter or if isn't getting enough oil pressure to flow up the head... either way great buy!!!! even if you replace the engine it's still a agreat buy!

Lifter tick. Nothing to worry about but you better get used to it if your gonna have a 4g63 LOL :thumb:

Alright man check out the timing belt tensioner. I had one blow a seal and it sounded like a monkey under the hood beating on a frying pan. I knew it was a new engine so it wasnt a rod and then finally looked at the belt tensioner and there it was. the pully was bouncing in and out on top of the tensioner thus making the tapping sound.

The 3rd gen lifters don't tick, so you can put a set of those in if you like. You can get non-ticking lifters from basically any shop that carries parts for the 4g63.

You can try adding ATF 4 (Automatic Trans Fluid) to the oil and see if it helps at all. There are alot of detergents in it! The best way to get rid of that is replace the lifters with the revised 3G lifters.
