Between my mother and I we have a sonata and a civic.........I like driving these cars but DSMs have been on my mind since age 13, I'm now turning 17. I can pick up a cheap 1g dsm for a few thousand but then again I want to buy something that I can keep for a while. So I'm leaning towards a 2g. With the money I've spent on a cheap 1g I can save for some payments on a nicer 2g. I'm trying to find a nice DSM near me soon because their aren't many for sale near me and their getting harder to find it seems. I'm doing pretty good at juggling a job and school so I'm not afraid to work for something. Any advice for me?

I suggest deciding what you REALLY want and then saving to get it. For me it was a 2g GSX. They are hard to find but can be had for a decent price. If you don't need it to be your daily driver right away the best thing to do would be to find one with crankwalk a.k.a. a "clutch problem" that the owner is selling for cheap, then swap in a 6-bolt so you don't ever have to worry about that particular issue.

Also, find one completely stock if you can. If it's already modded it's been beat on most likely. I got mine already modded and it has more problems than I can count. On the other hand it also has a 6-bolt and a built tranny that I didn't have to pay for so it's a trade-off I suppose.

yea but building it is the fun part, its what got me jacked about getting a DSM in the first place.

and on choosing between 1g or 2g, pick the one you feel you like more. you cant get one because its cheaper and regret not getting the other so if you have to wait a little for the money, id say its worth it.

Im going to agree with everyone on the stock dsm subject. I had found a heavily modded 1g talon with around $30,000.00 dropped into it.I figured I would have to put alot less money in finishing it, so I payed $5000.00 cash for it.At first it seemed to be the greatest deal around, but it turned out to be a big money pit. I have now dropped $7000.00 in just fixing the problems that came with it.If I would have started from stock, and slammed that money into it,I would have had a better start. I do not regret it because of my love for DSMs,but atleast if you build it,you know everything that you've done to it. Good luck

id get a awd ive had a 1g fwd 2g fwd and i went back to 1g but i went awd this time keep id some reserach 2gs have more issues in my book with crankwalk and the transmissions are weaker but its all up to you

Personaly i love the looks of a 2g over a 1g. Dont get me wrong 1gbs are sexy but theres thers jsut something about a 2g. Also dont let the thought of crankwalk scare you out a 2g. Its not really as common as ppl make it out to be. I have a 2ga gst with 105k on her and shes still running strong. Its all about he tlc you give her. The better you treat her, the more reliable she will be to you.

Which one did you visually like more between the 2?

Performance wise youd likely go faster in the 1g.
Some say 2gs are better set up for autocross.
The 1g will be easier to work on and a 6bolt may hold up to mods better than a 7bolt
but the 1g will be more likely to have older more worn out parts on it.
Theres a lot of pros and cons between the two, it comes down to what your doing
with the cars and which one your more biased too to begin with.

Crankwalk is not a worry for me, it's less than it's hyped up to be......I actually forgot about it untill you just mentioned it. LOL And Black_Bullet, I've referred to the comparison chart numerous times before, very helpfull. I'm just stuck on do I buy a cheap, but nice DSM now just to have or to wait untill I find "the one" however long it may be.

Id say as long your positive of whether you want a 1g or a 2g and as long as it runs good, and doesnt have hack jobs done to it, and is awd i think youll be satisfied without waiting forever for the perfect dsm which i dont think any dsm will be perfect LOL.
In all honestly, the fun part is building a car that had nothing and didnt look the greatest and you putting your hard work and creativity into it and making it fast while giving it incredible looks... At least thats what i did when I had my gst, and what I did with my awd laser... The car looked hidious ( exaggeration) but now it definitly looks good for a 1g...

1g or 2g, you really can't go wrong... these cars are awesome! :thumb:

Since you're really not opposed to either generation, my advice is to keep your options open and just look around for any DSM (1g, 2g, or GVR4) in good condition with a decent price.

Since you like 2g's more I'd suggest you save up and just keep searching for a good deal. If you purchase a turbo 1g you will get the mod bug and will start modding. Once that happens I'm not sure if you'll be able to stop modding until you see a big hole in your wallet or even worse.
