Im looking into getting ground control coilovers with koni yellows for track and auto X racing. the only problem is ive heard from a certain popular dsm shop that the GC coil bind on 1gs. anyone heard of this? if so any solutions. i dont have a ton of money but i want a decent setup and ive heard bad things about several of the other major coilover setups and their shitty dampers.

I doubt that meant binding (which is when the spring is fully compressed). I suspect they mean that the spring does not rotate nicely on the perch. If this really is an issue, there are Torrington bearings to take care of it.

i talkd to them to clarify and they said coil bind, the coils compressing too much and basically bottoming the spring out. I was shocked to hear this and now im second guessing the setup. any help guys? ive read around and i cant post on the other topics yet so im kinda needing some help before i make a big purchase.

yeah i can, and i just got off the phone with proparts and was talking about shocks and now that i have faced the reality that i will be spending 1500 on shocks i now can get any spring rate i want so yeah looking at 600#.
jesus this gets expensive fast.

I thought the GC kit used 8" springs for 1Gs. No way will those bind at the standard rates of 350# or more. At 600# (which is a lot for a 1G), binding wouldn't come close to being an issue.

The rule of thumb is you need twice the spring as your suspension travel.

I installed a set of gc a few weeks ago. There recommendation was 375# front 6" springs and 250# 7" springs for a dd. I installed them and notice with the strut theads extended to the top the car front was 1" lower than stock. I called gc about the problem and they sent me 375# 7" front springs. They worked great, I was able to set the ride height 3/4" lower than stock. Also the strut theads were not at the top. The ride is better then the stock springs. It is not as bouncy. I am not getting any coil bind.

good to know, i appreciate that info. now the real question, hows the travel for your shocks? Ive heard that there is very little available once you lower the car a bit with the GC so im looking at getting shortened racing konis.

You should call gc,they were very helpful. They recommend 1" drop from stock. I decided to lower it 3/4" to be safe. I didn't even cut my bump stops and I have not hit them yet. For my car i measured 26 3/4" from the ground to the lip of the fender well. I measured straight thu the middle of the wheel.
