I'm in the market for a toy. A car that I can work on and over time make fast. I'm a fan of the 1G eclipses, but would like to get as new vehicle as I can. I'm trying to decide if I should go turbo from the factory or get an aftermarket kit of the 420A. It'll be a project/hobby car that I'll drive a couple times a week.

Would a DSM be something I should be looking into? My ultimate goal would be low 13's in the 1/4, although it won't be seeing the track often. I'm being directed more towards a V8 powerplant, but I really loved my '94 eclipse and would like to get back to my roots.

Budget is indifferent as it'll only take time for me to raise the funds, at about 1K per month.

I hate to say it, but it's down to a few choices...Eclipse, Mustang, Acura/Honda, Camaro/TransAm.

Just trying to get a feel.

Get a 2G Turbo AWD. You'll never look back.

I had the Naturally Aspirated FWD but realized it will cost a lot more money to make it fast than a Turbo AWD. So I sold my NA FWD and picked up a Turbo AWD. I love it. Plus the AWD is sick. Just my $0.02. :) Best of luck with whatever you decide. Tom.

get the dsm i love my eclipse its amazing and pretty easy to work on and there fun as hell to drive

If your goal is just 13's, get the trans am and your there already. My dad has one. There pretty fast. It would smoke my car, until I get rid of the t-25.

I think there's really only 2 choices, AWD or LS1?

LoL...

Why would you even consider getting the 420a model.
Just so a real dsm with awd can launch on you and/ or fly by you like you werent moving
while you were dumping money trying to turbo a garabadge n/a engine he'd be dumping money trying to get a BIGGER turbo on a 500+hp capable stock block and still have traction. and then youll end up hating dsm for loosing to them ( like honda ppl ) or end up spending twice getting a awd model... Come on that comparison is like saying do you want a chick with a nice face but no body.
Or a chick with a nice face big tits and an ass..With money LOL... Think about it...

I'll have a #2 please :D. But Seriously the only reasons i would ever get a 420a are:
1) Daily Driver For Gas (not applicable to you)
2) To have a challenge for meeting goals. Because with this you need to make power, and you need to find ways to get traction with all that power. (Which could be pretty fun to attempt). So it all depends on if you want the easy or hard path.

Well ive done the hard path, i did a non turbo 4g63 1g to turbo swap before and had/have a gst ( im selling ) that i also built it up to 300hp and realize its not fun when you spin thru 1st and 2nd gear which made me finnaly go awd as my last venture in the dsm world.
Its safer to I must say fwd feels so unstable and unpredicatable to me now that ive got a built awd dsm.

If it's just a toy and not a DD then you'd be fine with a DSM.

However I had a 5.0 before my DSM. Kinda wish I would have kept the 5.0. Then again my car has been down for like 2 weeks.

I'd say a 5.0 stang or 6bolt dsm.
