whenever you want you never really need one its just a luxuary not to have to sit in the car and wait for it to cool

You dont ever NEED one, but its nice to have so that after a drive with alot of boosting you dont have to wait in the car for it to cool down. You can just set the turbo timer and walk away. You can install it on a stock car. I installed one on mine because one night i opened my hood, and saw my manifold glowing, and the car was still stock.

When you no longer have a water-cooled turbo, or find that you frequently have to stop and shut off the engine immediately after doing third-gear pulls.
If you go easy the last mile before turning off the engine, not even a "dry" (oil-cooled) turbo needs a timer.
Some timers include other gee-gaws that prove occasionally useful (voltmeters, for instance).

When you want to look cool. Not quite necessary as defiant mentioned with an oil and water cooled turbo. And even if its just oil cooled, the time it takes from after you do your last hard pull, up to when you park, should be sufficient enough cooling. Unless of course its at the track and you get out after your run.

Also helpful during really hot or really cold weather, start up the car and set the temp then set desired time and come back with the car interior temp to your liking.
