Okay, i should have started with more research before any mods on my wifes GSX, but it was broke and i figured while i needed a new turbo, why not upgrade. so the turbo went out and after calling many places they all recommended the evo3 16G. they all said that with this turbo, injectors and a pump, that it's just a bolt on and should be great. next thing i know i have to have a AFC NEo installed to handle the fuel.

i will be installing a boost controller (manual, and if anyone has recomendations, or know of one that is good and can be installed in cockpit please let me know), boost gauge and should be able to stop there for a little while. it is my wifes toy and not meant to be a 10 second car, she just wants it to be pretty, and beat the average mustang, or the above average civic. so other than a large front mount, what am i missing? do i need a wideband o2 (i was told no,) what about a data logger (or do i just need that if i'm running higher boost, planning on 14/15/16, not sure yet. any recomendations on PSI, and i will obviously get it tuned, but just thought i would ask.)

i have already spent about 2500 or so (aleardy 500 over budget) and am trying to stop the bleeding before i get carried away. by the way, after the install of the new turbo, major detonation due to boost creep (boost holds steady at 10 PSI till 5000 RPm then shoots up to 22.) so i sent it back to Forced Performance, and they said that this is a common problem if running a large exhaust, so he ported the waste gate and put on a bigger flapper. is this a common problem, i hadn't heard about it until it happened to me, and still haven't heard anyone else complain about this problem, even though a lot of places say that this is a common turbo swap.

i know this is a long thread, but i am at wits end here and would just like some solid guidance, and for someone to maybe tell me that everything will be okay :( . i will install the newly ported turbo this week, and while it's on jack stands wanted to take care of everything else, so before i open her up again i could really use some help. Thanks a lot.

A datalogger is immensely appropriate for what you are doing, along with the WBO2. The AFR needs to be set to the correct proportions, which will have an initial setting based on the equipment you have.

The wide band will give you accurate readings (better than stock 02) on where your AFR should be set and the datalogger will tell you what these readings are. The logger will also tell you the knock rating and at what points you are getting knock - important for setting your MBC to proper levels.

The boost creep IS likely due to too much flow through your waste gate at lower rpms and may require a larger flapper to control boost levels at lower rpms.
It may actually be your WG actuator or the vacuum lines (that are controlling your wastegate) not completely closing it when you want it to. You will have to check all your lines, actuator, and solenoid.
Hope this helps you out!

Definitely get a logger, you'll thank yourself later.... and get a wideband, look up the innovate lc-1 wideband, it doesn't have a gauge, but you can log and tune with it. These two things are ABSOLUTELY necessary for having a happy car, I don't care what your mods are or what boost pressure you're trying to run, it's like a doctor jumping on a patient with a scalpel without testing things like blood pressure first....

Even on a "mildly tuned" car, you will still sleep better at night knowing that your timing curve is proper, and that you're not burning your valves with lean air fuel charges.

I hope this helps, and you're a stand up guy for doing this for your wife, and she must be an amazing woman as well for loving her dsm instead of hating it after the turbo went out.

Now post pictures of her.... (your wife, not the car) hahaha, kidding. Good luck.

Thanks for the info so far, i was hoping to stop where i'm at and just drive it for a little while before i had to spend any more money, but that's why i posted here.

As far as the wastegate is concerned, it has been checked and is functioning properly because i thought that it was at fault. Like i said though, Forced Performance said that this is a common problem that could be corrected with porting and a new flapper. if that doesn't work i will have to go external.

my main concern was, is there anything that i am missing and need to do right now, or will this be okay for a little while. again, it's not exactly a daily driver, but it's not for the strip either. she will drive it too and from work, and wants to beat the people that think she is just a girl with all show and no go. when the turbo blew, it gave me the opportunity to addres the "go" part of the equation before the "show." this is her dream car and i want it to be perfect for her, and i know that is a long way off, but i am just getting started. we will go farther with it, just not yet (i have to wait till we can have it painted, and the interior, etc..)

Again, any more info would be greatly appreciated, including how to post properly. Thanks.

The lc-1 can be had for less than 200 and you can get a logger for between 50 and 100 dollars.

I would highly recommend against turning the boost up with a manual boost controller before getting those two things, it's just asking for a problem.
