as a continuation of my dsm's story in the past few months

i just finished putting my pistons back in my block, i should get my new head from ups tomorrow or monday...

anyways, to the matter at hand... how do i go about finding TDC for #1?? im guessing that's there it'll need to be when i go to put everything back together..

thank you for your time and help

There is a mark on your block next to the crank pully. There is also a mark on the Crank pully. now line up and the marks on the ballance shaft pully...... If you buy a Chilton manual it would show you pics...

Yup, line up the marks ( V shaped on the plate, To the "arrow" on the oil pan cover. Once done, look at the #1 piston, it should be at the top of the cylinder.

TDC is easy, find the top of the piston travel for cylinder 1. Then double check that the crank timing mark lines up with the mark on the block.

Read the timing belt VFAQ for hos you then line up everything else to cause that TDC of the crank to become TDC compression stroke for engine timing. (memember that the crank passes through TDC twice in one cycle, once compression the mixture and once pushing the exhaust out of the cylinder

I was as well going to suggest the v-faq and chiltons/Factory Service Manual as well as you are going to have more questions when you get the head installed, and time to put the belt back on.

& by EVERYTHING ELSE what Steve means here is that IF you have #1 at TDC when you install the Head make sure that the HEAD is timed the SAME also before you lay it on the Block - I check the MARKS like Steve said, then PERSONALLY I wimp out & put all the Pistons only half way up - Then I Time the Head at #1 Compression (all Valves CLOSED) like Steve said - Install the Head, then I bring #1 Piston up slowly to TDC to get ready for T/Belt install after the Head is Torqued - If your scared just use a long Screwdriver thru the Spark Plug hole (all plugs are out for Install of course) to sense where #1 Piston is at while you are moving the Crank - MAKE SURE the Battery is DISconnected because spinning an untimed Motor is the KISS OF DEATH - Review the several good Tech Articles on all this, including:
