Just curious if anyone had problems with their AGP rs49 turbos for the ones that had them?

My second one went out on me this week. Both of mine had less than 2000 miles on them. And both times the turbo seals went out causing lots of blue smoke.
The first time it was under warranty and they rebuilt it for free, and 2000miles later it happened again.

I would get back on the phone with Ben at AGP again and talk to him. I would also check your oil feed and drain line's to make sure that you aren't starving the turbo's for oil.

I was about to say it sounds like the turbo is being starved of oil. Make sure you still have good clean oil lines. Also make sure you have good oil pressure. If your running the oil from the head I would swap it to the oil filter housing but that should not cause it to die that fast.

Also did you just do a motor build, because sometimes particles from the new build can kill turbos. You made sure you primed the turbos before running them right?

If you blew the oil seals, perhaps your oil drain wasn't flowing enough and leaving excessive oil pressure in the turbo?

I ask this because when I first installed my 50-trim, the oil drain that came from the idiot vendor wasn't designed properly and to get it to line up required a slight bend/kink in the hose. Visually I thought it was ok but it seems it caused enough of a pinch that I immediately got oil into the exhaust (and of course blue smoke). Replacing this with some better fittings that aligned so as not to bend the hose fixed my problem.

The oil is coming from the oil filter housing, at the tap that is recommended. Autometer oil pressure gauge readings are normal from the oil filter housing. And there is no kinks in the oil lines. I have the oil lines it came with. The oil has been changed several times after the rebuild. About 4000 miles ago.
And just found ou my new shep race trans went out on me so there goes my fp3052

Did you happen to ask AGP how the turbo died??

It could be:

Hot Shut down
Trash in the oil
Clogged Oil Drain
Oil Starvation.

It sounds to me like there is something wrong with you setup that is killing these turbos.

AGP designs there DSM turbos horribly. First off, Mitsu housing is creates a lot of back pressure so running high boost is not a good idea. Secondly, with AGP's design the turbos is not getting enough oil or always clogs. Last, Turbonetics make really bad turbo or at least the T60-1, AGP RS60. It has the worst CHRA and has been known with for the bearing system to fall apart. In essence with the high back pressure, not getting enough oil or clogging actor one of these factor come into play;

back pressure - either shaft play or the bearing system to fall apart
oil problem - turbo overheat.

Even if AGP rebuild your turbo again I will guaranteed the it will be unreliable yet again. Cheapness won't buy performance go with Garrett, Bullseye, PP, etc...

is it the actual AGR RS49 or the AGP RS49T ?

I had a AGP RS49 for 2 years before I sold it without a single problem and then I had a friend that had a AGP RS49T (turbonetics) that failed with in 5 months ....and then had it rebuilt and failed again I think with in a year if that ??
And he didn't even put alot of miles on them ...as mine had 15K on it without a single problem !

What good is a warranty if you have to use it all the time ??

Its the AGP RS49T The first time when I sent it to them for the warranty. I asked them what was the cause of the failure and they said theyll call me back. I called back a week later and they said the same thing...never called me back for cause of failure.

The turbo was always turbo timed and used synthetic oil.
When I took the turbo off there was no debris in the oil inlet or turbo oil inlet, that I saw.
Before smoke was coming out of the exhaust it wasnet holding boost to redline either. And that turned out to be the tubo as well

The RS49T has a crappy history, we all know that. The more interesting part to be noted is that for some time now the BEP 50 trim, AGP RS49T, older SBR G50, PTE 5031 used to ALL share the SAME CHRA. The turbonetics 50 trim CHRA has such an off-track record that the feedback of good and bad would make it look like a roller coaster. However, the RS49 turbo from AGP is the good stuff :thumb:

I'm not at all surprised that the CHRA took a crap on you. Turbonetics CHRA FTL. Oh, and yes, my SBR G50 started wobbling like a fat chick on a merry-go-round at around 4kmiles.
