My 91 talon has 150,000 miles on it and it runs great. Some people tell me to drive it till it blows, but I was wondering if I could turn up my boost by a couple of pounds and not blow my motor. One mechanic told me the motor is strong but I'm not sure if he is right. How can i really tell?

A compression test will tell give you a good idea of the overall condition of the engine. Also.. how well was the car maintained up to 150k miles? That will provide better results on your compression test if you maintained it well. My GST has 89k and they said its about the same now as it was the day I bought it due to proper maintenance. By checking the compression a mechanic will be able to give you a supported answer as to why you should or shouldnt turn up your boost. Here, you can go get your engine tested for about 50-70 bucks at any mechanic shop, or you can search for a do-it-yourself tester.. but from what I have read they really arent as reliable but I have no idea about them, someone back me up on this?

I have 180k on bottom end and run 18 psi holding good so far. But done all the checks shadow talked about.

A mechanic will likely use a compression gauge of similar quality to one that you or I would use at home.

Make sure you get a proper boost gauge if you plan on turning it up.

If motor checks out, do a tune up/maintenance
and turn it up
