Which OEM-fit high-flow Catalytic converter is best?

Hi,

I drive a '96 GS-T Spyder, and I have read that replacing the stock catalytic converter with a high-flow cat will improve performance. However, I cannot find any info on what type or which model is best.

Right now, my entire exhaust system is stock. What I'm ultimately looking for is an inexpensive way to upgrade my Cat or otherwise reduce backpressure.

Does anyone have experience with direct-bolt-on high flow Cats for turbo DSMs using the remainder of the OEM exhaust piping? Any one know which bolt-on flows best?

Or, any fairly inexpensive alternative exhaust reccommendations? This car is my daily driver, and I'm not looking to ultimately upgrade much (maybe 300hp), so I figure either the stock 2.25 inch or a 2.5 inch is enough for me.

A simple straight pipe will flow better than a high flow and can be had on ebay for 15 dollars. Unless you are worried about emissions I would say go with a straight pipe.
 
The environment will thank you if you run a cat. I'd much rather have a 3" cat than a 2.5" test pipe, if only because it was helping to reduce my emissions.

3" will make it easier to make more power, getting rid of the cat helps with back pressure too... On my van I put a cut out (there are trick electric ones too!) before the cat. At the track, I undid the cut out, on the street, I hooked it up.

An exhaust shop can hook everything up cheaply. An aftermarket high flow will be cheaper than an OEM style one too.
 
Magnaflow #23243 is a bolt-on high flow cat.

Test pipes are much cheaper, and do flow slightly better, but if you live in an area that does emissions testing, or you are environmentally conscious, pick up the converter.
 
I understand that a straight pipe will flow a littl ebetetr than a high-flow cat, but I am too conciencious to use a straight pipe.(plus I don't like the smell).

Can anyone reccomend either a direct factory-fit bolt-on high-flow cat, or a 2.5" or laregr system that's not too expensive? ... Again, total cost (including installation fees) is most important for me.

Magnaflow #23243 is a bolt-on high flow cat.

Has anyone passed emissions with this bolt-on cat? I'm interested in picking this up. Any feedback on this would greatly help my cause. The stealership wants $500 for an new one here in Cali:notgood:. They have a monopoly on the item since no one else makes a true "50-state legal OBD2 compliant" one for 2g Dsms. I truly don't care wether it's high flow or not, I just want one that'll pass on the sniffer. Thanks.
 
Thanks for the input but, I don't need one that's polished and shiny. I don't need anymore attention under the car. We sell Magnaflow at my work so I get a good discount on it. I know it's 49-state but, I'm sure it'll do a better job than my factory cat is doing now.
