first let me say that this site rocks and i appreciate any knowledge anyone can pass on to me. I have owned a dsm previously but it was totally stock. Recently I was missing it so I purchased a new one from a buddy that didnt run for $400. The body is perfect so it is definatly worth sinking some $$ into. I bought a rebuilt head so far and i am gonna drop the block off at the machine shop soon, but i wanted to ask you all a few questions before i start buying a bunch of stuff.
Should I have the block bored 20 over since the new pistons are the same price stock or oversized?
The stock turbo has a lot of cracks on the turbine side, so im considering a b16g. Good Idea?
What supporting mods other than injectors and fuel pump(and rewire) should i have for boost around 20psi?
I need new cams, do i need any supporting mods for BC Stage II cams?

thanks :rocks:

I did something almost exactly the same with my first DSM. Previous owner had the timing belt snap and sold it for $600 with a perfect body and interior. Rebuilt the engine for ~800 and sold it for 3k:thumb: . Anyway, 14b's have a usual stress crack through the wastegate hole, and around the turbine inlet. As long as the cracks are very thin, and don't go through the whole housing you should be okay IMO. Have the machine shop decide if the block needs to be bored out at all, and if the pistons aren't dinged up too bad, smooth out the sharp marks from the valves hitting the piston if that's what happened and you are going for near stock power levels. Why do you need new cams? If you get aggressive cams, you will want to consider better valve springs. Supporting mods for 20psi should definitely include a tuning device such as safc/logger, DSMlink etc. This all depends on your goals for the car.

Edit: Check for up and down/in and out shaftplay on the turbo and any wear marks on the housing. There should be very very little to no in/out, and a small amount of up/down. The less the better.

the cracks are pretty bad and would cause bad boost creep even with an oversized wastegate flapper. do you recommend another 14 b or should i go with something else since i gotta spend some money anyhow? i need new cams ### there is bad scrathes on them? the topline rebuild kit im buying comes with pistons so i was gonna get the 20 overs for the same price. i am wanting more power than stock.

The cracks would not cause boost creep, they would increase lag and/or make boost fall off if anything. I also wouldn't risk running cams with scratches, but the cams you buy depend on the turbo and how you want the car to behave. If you are looking for power, I wouldn't reuse the pistons if you snapped a belt. What was wrong with the car? Snapped belt or something else? Please specify. Depending on the engines mileage, or if you just felt better about getting it bored out, wait and see what the machine shop has to say.

What are your power goals?

If you're not planning on working your way up the mod list past 350hp, then I'd recommend a 2g ported exhaust mani if you plan on putting it back together with the Big16g and having both ported the same. The 1g is prone to cracking more than the 2g, and you can get a 2g stock for cheap and port it or spend more to have it ported to a 7cm^2 gasket.

And get a boost gauge and MBC/EBC.

If you're going to build it up in stages, that's all I can think of for starters other than what's already been suggested. I'd say stick with stock cams unless you have money laying around. You can get better top end performance with cams to compensate for the small AR turbine housing.

2.5" or 3" catback or turboback would help if you want to go past 250hp or so.

I'm a 2g guy, so maybe this is a dumb suggestion, but if they're the same, consider eliminating the balance shafts while the motor's on a stand.

That's all I can think of.

i did forget to mention that i am planing on eliminating the balance shafts. i will also have to get a new exh man ### mine is cracked. as far as cams go, i have to get new ones anyways and there is not a big price difference between new stocks and the bc's.

if your wanting high power, you would also want to consider intercooler upgrades, cores and piping. that will help a lot, more so the pipes. hard pipes if nothing. stage two bc cams probably would be overkill if your not using a giant turbo, i wouldnt waste your money and keep the stockers. your gunna wanna crush your blowoff valve so it will hold that psi level. remove the balance shafts, and when your in there a new water pump would be convienient. you maybe also want to look into a downpipe and a catback exhaust definatly. 3 inches is good and wont sound stupid. high flow cat, ngk plug wires. ngk bpr7es plugs, and even a tubular manifold if you want to spend the $$.
thats really all i can think of for a little more power.
oh wait, all those free mods also.
they can be found in the upgrade path on this site under stage 0 =]
