Ok so im going to picking up a 2nd gen TSI or a GSX soon. Most likely either one will have over 100k miles and i would like to get a new motor or rebuild the one in it. But when people say rebuild what does that consist of? Or is it better to just get a new motor? I also dont know the difference between a 6 and 7 bolt motor. I have read about them alot on here. My goal is a 350-400 awhp DD. So i do plan on upgrading the turbo way down the road after the free mods and some supporting mods. Also how are these AWD trannys? Can they take launches or do i need to be carefull with it? How much power can the stock tranny take?

Thanks ahead of time for the help im new to dsms

I also forgot another question. I know on the wrx/sti you need engine management for any modification on the car. On the dsm's do i need to get a tune after stuff like intake, exaust, mbc, and other little stuff like that? I know i will once i upgrade the turbo, intercooler, and the fuel. Just wondering on the little stuff.

Ok, if you're rebuilding an engine, you're going to want to start with piston rings. You're going to have to buy an engine hoist, and a fair set of tools. You're going to want to replace the timing belt (go ahead and go kevlar). While you have the motor out, remove the balancing shaft. Check the condition of the oil pan (dents ect), replace the oil pump and water pump. DSMs are bad about ring lands, so you're going to most likely have to replace the pistons. If you're targeting 400 awhp, you're going to be doing some tuning. You might want to go ahead and invest in forged pistons and rods (incase you run a little lean, the forged is more forgiving). That's a pretty good start. Expect to invest around $3000 in completely rebuilding. For 400 awhp and drag conditions, the factory AWD tranmission is shit. Go ahead and replace with ShepTrans transmission. That'll be another $2,200 (you have to seperate the motor and transmission already so it's pretty easy). Dont expect this to come out of a weekend. Pending on parts and how much you know already and how much you spend, this could take months. Building a car is never easy tho. It's going to be a ####load of work.

On bolton parts for DSMs, you dont really need tuning for most (intake exhaust ect) but to see the full goods, you're going to want to. Go ahead and invest in a boost gauge, oil pressure gauge, and wideband O2 with gauge.

All second gens have 7 bolts. You're going to want to do a 6 bolt swap. That's going to be fun. My advice to you is if you have rebuilt an engine before, which Im guessing you havent, go ahead and buy a 6 bolt and start cracking. If you havent, go ahead and buy an engine stand, find someone that knows what they're doing and have them help you. Once you get the motor fully rebuilt, start looking at how to put it in.

He is looking at 2g awd, so it will be a 7 bolt unless he buys one with a swap done. The 2g stock tranny will hold 450 whp if you now how to drive and aren't stupid with it. They will take the launches but you shouldn't be doing 6k side steps on the clutch. For the engine the stock motor will hold that power. But if you are going to rebuild it I would go with forged rods and pistons.

400 whp on the stock trans? For how long? He's saying it already has 100k+. I guess it all depends on the current health of the motor and tranmission. It's going to be hard to put down 400 if you have 30 lbs of compression on a cylinder.

If your not stupid with it, it will last for a long time. Yes, I have personally have seen it done. It lasted over 5 years and thousands of drag races. It finally got upgraded because he was scared it wouldn't last long with the new 600whp set up. At the time it had about 70k on it and the car was built the day he got it off the show room floor.

Yeah if he has 30lbs of compression he won't be making 400 hp. I don't think anybody ever said he would. I did say that the stock motor can handle 400 hp. That 450whp was also on a stock short block.

Ok well i might look into the 6 bolt swap. Do you know of any sites that sell them? Im guessing the 6 bolt is a 1st gen motor? But my first mods will consist of the fee mods except for a few such as the intake filter and the boost solenoid. Then get an intake, bov, mbc, and 3 inch tbe. After that ill probly just learn more on the different turbo set-ups. Possible a 50 trim, 20g or a fp turbo.

Well right now i found this site dsmparts.com and im looking at there motors. Are these guys about average priced? Because if i do a motor swap i want brenad new not one with miles.
