Need a little advice from the transmission guys. 98 RS n/t about 100k miles. Trans shifts well on upshifts although the shifts are fairly soft but no slippage. On the downshift when coming to a stop about half the time it seems to stay in 2nd until almost completely stopped then it flares, engine speed picks up some and then drops into first making the drivetrain jump on the mounts. Pulled pan for filter change and no evidence of anything coming apart, no shavings or pieces. Put new filter and Mitsubishi fluid but seems to be no different. Can the dealer modify shift points in the TCU or are there possible upgrades for the TCU that I would need to get from them? Are there any adjustments that I can make that will affect shift characteristics? I appreciate any help you can offer.

have you tried pulling the tcu codes? if not theres a vfaq on how to do it in the auto tranny forum. the ony way to really change shift points is with a shift kit or the ipt shift box

Well, the DSM automatic transmission is just about never in 1st gear unless you are completely stopped. So that IS normal for it to suddenly downshift after a while like that. You could check your mounts and make sure that is all good.

Thanks for the responses. I printed the procedure for pulling the TCU codes but I was unable to see anything with my digital meter. The picture on the procedure showed the ALDL connector to be by the drivers kickpanel but this one was on the right side of the column close to the center console. Anyway, I guess I will find someone with a scanner to see if they can check it for error codes. I know the 2-1 shift should be at nearly stopped speeds but instead of just dropping down to first smoothly it acts like it is confused and then lurches into first, especially if you are braking hard and coming to a quick stop. If anyone has any other suggestions, fire away. Thanks
