Starter Murdered Flywheel? Holes bored out?

My GSX wasn't starting (grinding starter) So I pulled the starter out and saw that one of the holes the starter mounts in isn't exactally a complete circle. It is a little oval. Could this small imperfection in one of the starter holes have caused the starter to destroy my flywheel teeth? (They are grinded down pretty bad not allowing my car to start)

Thanks in advance! :rocks:

If the pinion was allowed to move away from the ring gear a bit, it would likely do just that. The starter produces a tremendous amount of torque, and if it not bolted down securely, it may want to walk away.

Seems like a viable diagnosis to me, but post pics of which hole and how it is elongated, if you want stronger input.

Were all the bolts for the transmission and starter in place and tight, when you removed them? I don't have a 4g63 close to compare; is the bolt hole oblonged in a way that allows the starter to rotate away from the ring gear?

One of the bolts was near finger tight.

When you say ring gear, are you talking about the gear on the flywheel?

Did you try tightening it first or adjusting the starter since it was grinding. Or did you just tear it all apart?

The starter already destroyed the flywheel so I just replaced it. Before I put the transmission back I want to make sure the same thing doesn't happen
