Are you talking about where the shifter cables attach to the transmission " arms " You can just get a cotter pin and put it through there to hold it down. Make sure to separate and bend the pin so it does not back out and you have the same problem again.

The retaining bracket near the end of the cable. If the bracket or cable comes loose, the cable will flex and move around, with little to no force making it to the shift levers.

The areas circled in green are where the cotter-pins hold the cable to the shift lever.

The area circled in red is the cable's retaining bracket. The other cable is obscured and not circled. Make sure the cables are secured to the bracket.

The pic was taken with the battery and intake pipe removed. The bracket would be straight below the intake pipe, on top of the transmission. In the above pic, the area circled in red is the cable retainer bracket. The cable should be held to the bracket with a clip, just like the retainers behind the shifter assembly inside the cabin.

The other cable is not circled in the pic, it is obscured behind the EGR pipe and engine harness.

well i looked at the suggestions and there is a c clip missing so i have to put one on so the shift linkage stays in place

Glad you found it.

Try a scrapyard first, for finding another clip. I am not sure how many parts stores would have them, but it couldn't cost very much at the dealership.
