How important is oil anyway?

I cranked over my 6 bolt for the first time today. I had fuel pump fuse disconnected and I've been trying to prime it for oil pressure but I've got none. I thought the sending unit was bad, but I pulled it out of the filter housing and no oil is coming out of that. I ported the pressure relief valve because of the BS removal, but even if that was done too much wouldn't some oil at least come out of the port for the sender? Its brand new everything and I'm wondering if the gasket might not be lined up but all the bolt holse lined up. Even if the pump wasn't packed with grease it should at least build enough pressure to send oil out of an open hole in the filter housing, right? Any suggestions before I have to take this whole front cover off? I want to let the jack down on my head this is so frustrating.

He says he did pack it, but I don't know. Its got assembly lube in it so I'm gonna put fuel to it and crank it, let it fire for like 5-10 seconds and see if i get pressure. I've also put some oil down in the cylinders. I'm hoping its just not creating enough of a suction in the gears from just the starter. Even if he did pack them, I've turned it over so many times when i installed the timing belt and set the tension that it just might not be enough left. Anyone else believe that, because i don't.

Thanks for all your help. I finally had to pressurize the oil system with a canister and my air compressor. Once I did that I finally got the air out of the pump and pickup and it cranks with pressure now.
