I have a 1G Eagle Talon Tsi that is almost running. I was looking around on the threads reading about different turbos I could use for my car. My goal is to hopefully upgrade and put about 300WHP to the ground. My problem is that in Alaska, my car has to pass a visual inspection during its I/M. So heres my situation. I need a turbo that is the same size as the stock turbo...that I can get a lot of power from.

I have read good and bad things about the Evo III 16g ported. It seems a lot of people don't get as much power from it as others do. But then it also seems to have somethig to do with the platform car they have as well as if they have any tuning performance software. But I am still out looking and if anyone has ideas to throw at me I would greatly appreciate it. Turbo will be the last of the other upgrades I am looking into, but it would be good to have one set in mind for when that time comes. :D

EVO III 16g or the TDO5 bastard 20g would make well over 300whp and look totally stock to someone that wouldnt know.:thumb:

Well I should also find out. what upgrades will help the 16G turbo EvoIII work to its maximum?

Sweet, finally another person to talk to in fairbanks about dsms. I too was thinking about this the other day and not too many people around here know too much about our cars. The evo 16g will pass any, if not all visual tests around here. Either that or keep your stocker and throw it back on once every 2 years...

Here's my .02

I think you're on the right track....

Your engine (and car as a whole) is a sytem. To get the most out of it, all the parts have to work together in an optimum way. You will find people that are running stock turbos putting out truckloads of power and scary 1/4 mile times. You'll also find people with $3,000 turbos that can't break into the 13's.

I'm not a DSM (or turbo) expert, but I've built a few old-school motors in my day. But I'm learning about these things.... Regardless of that, some things don't change. If you want the most from your car, EVERYTHING has to work together and be tuned properly.

Long story short... After LOTS of research here and in other places, I'm going with an EvoIII 16g because I believe it can get me to where I want to be. But I'm doing it with everything else in mind also.

Bottom line... don't think that bolting on a certain "stock looking turbo that can make lots of power" will get you anywhere. Cause it won't... unless you support it with a tuned system that gets the most out of it.

Good luck! ;)

id go with the 16g also. i have one sitting next to me right now along with a smic from a 2 g.. came off my car when i put the precision 50 trim and the fmic

EvoIII 16g (ported not for more power but to eliminate creep, why do people not get that?)
550-660cc injectors
Tuning (dsmlink, AFC+datalogger, etc...)
Can you get away with a FMIC? If so I suggest one as well even up in cold Alaska they get warm days, otherwise a Supra SMIC w/alum. piping would be a good bet.
2.5" exhaust I would assume you can get away with, along with a high flow cat
190lph walbro fuel pump
ported 2g exhaust mani
MBC of course

I may have missed some things but I would assume (other then maybe the FMIC) you could get away with the visual inspection with those mods and they'll definately get you where you want to be performance wise.

Stick with the EVO III 16g and search for what you need. I think I respond to about 3-4 "What do a I need with my 16g?" threads a day so there is MORE than enough information.

Bad things about an Evo III 16g? No such thing :) It's one of the single best tdo5 turbos you can get. Just be sure if you do get one, to get a genuine MHI and not a knockoff.

I believe 2alpha was referring to porting, not the turbo in general. I really don't know if porting the turbo adds any type of performance gains, what I do know is that it can eliminate boost creep. Isn't that enough to make it worth doing? But back on topic I believe you've found your answer there big guy.

My bad :)

Porting is always good though.
