I am about to buy my 2nd 1st gen. It is a 91 Eagle Talon TSi. The guy says it needs a clutch but I think otherwise. He says he was driving down the road and it wouldnt go into gear. And I think he said it cut off. It will still crank it just wont go anywhere b/c you cant get in into gear. Am I right in saying that that is not a clutch problem? Maybe the synchros? I am going to look at the car Sat. morning and would like to have some info before I decide to buy it. Thanks!

If the car doesn't run, that's not a clutch problem, but I'm sure you already knew that.

If it's not going in any gear, then it could be a problem with the clutch, clutch fork, maybe the shift cables, or anything in the hydraulic system. Synchros will usually only affect one gear.

To add to what is posted above: if the car will go through all the gears while the engine is off then the gears are probably fine.

If you put it in first, push the clutch in and the car wants to move, the hydraulics are toast.

If it won't go through the gears with the engine off feel how the shifter moves. If there is no resistance at the shifter you probably have broken cables or possibly shift forks (which would likely break gears etc.)

If you can, see if the owner will let you drain the transaxle fluid. That will also tell you a lot. A little debris on an old tranny is normal, a lot or big chunks is bad.

When I bought my car it supposedly just had a clutch problem. Turned out to be clutch tranny, oil soaked turbo, and the oil soaked turbo ate up all the oil so all the main and rods bearings were trashed, you can only imagine the horrible rod knock it had.

But, if it doesnt start thats not good. Try shifting the car into gears when its off, if it goes into gear its most likely just the clutch, but we all know how the trannies are in the 1G's...
