Clutch makes a very nasty squeal when starting the car.

Toronto,
When I start her up I hear a skipping squeal, not like a belt squeal though, sounds like the clutch is rubbing the f*!@ out of something and skipping along. Then it will go away once the after a few seconds on its own. The car is in neutral when I start so why would clutch be a problem?

Also first gear squeals differently when engaged and goes away once the car is rolling. Then smooth through all other 4 gears.

I'm going to bleed the slave a second time when I get home..any ideas in the meantime?

EDIT:

Car starts up without the low grinding noise now after bleeding the clutch at least 20 times. I'm now finding it very hard to get into gear. I've adjusted the rod all the way out and it's still engaging very close to the floor and makes a faint chirping that goes away when i press the clutch in. Does this sound like different problems?

I would bleed the slave, like you siad, and see is that makes a difference. If it does and then the problem comes back you need a new slave cylinder. Not a hard replacement at all.

does the noise only occur when the clutch is disengaged (pedal pushed to the floor) or is the noise there when the clutch is engaged (pedal released)

...and just so you know, even with the car in neutral, the clutch is still spinning the input shaft...the only time the clutch stops meshing with the flywheel is when it is disengaged by putting the pedal to the floor...

I remember it griding for both engaged and disengaged. I will try again in an hour or two once my battery boosts back up.

So, if I press the clutch and it still makes a griding noise, that would eliminate the clutch right? Or can a bad TOB be a culprit (again starting the car up with the clutch engaged)

well if it makes the noise when the clutch is depressed, id lean more towards the TOB if it is clutch related, if it makes noise only when the clutch is released...possibly a tranny bearing....

...as for going in to gear hard...does it grind? or is the linkage itself hard?? have you checked the fluid in your tranny?
