Hey i just bought a used 5 speed transmission of the internet with about 60,000 miles on it for my 91 talon tsi fwd and when i took out the old trany i compared the two. Everything looks fine but when i started to shift it, it does not click like my old one through the gears it just slides through them and also wont move up or down for the rest of the gears. :cry: I dont want to put it in if its not going to work so if anyone knows whats wrong if anything please let me know.
Thanks:talon:

If everything was hooked up properly and you can get into any gears WHILE THE CAR IS OFF, you got ripped.

My old tranny sitting next to me clicks through all gears like your old one, I would be concerned.

I have a question of the same sorts.

My transmission lever going horizontally clicks into gear for 3 gears.

The vertical lever does not move unless the horizontall lever is in the middle gear, then the vertical lever will move back and forth, but still not click is this normal?

Sorry if that is confussing, I dont know the name of the gears.

Edit: The tranmission I have is not on the car and I bought it from a guy who said it worked fine except for a grind from 2nd to 1st ( no need to downshift there ).

The middle gear is nuetral, the verticle gear goes up when you move your shifter to the left, it goes down when you move your shifter to the right. in other words,

1st = verticle gear up, horizontal gear forward.
2nd = up, back.
3rd = middle, forward.
4th = middle, back.
5th = down, forward.
reverse = down, back.

Thanks, but lamen* it up a little more for me...is my tranny doing what it is supposed to do? It sounds like it is according to what you wrote.

So the vertical lever does not stay in any postion like the horizontal lever and does not click?

I'm not sure I understand your description of what it is doing. Are you saying it will only click in 3rd and 4th but not 1st, 2nd, 5th or R?

Damn it beavis, when did you edit your post, I have been sitting here waiting for that pm!!:cry: Don't you know old people go to bed early!!!:D

To the OP, if you're reading this, there is an ear on the shifter shaft that sits in a cradle called an interlock plate (this is inside the trans by the way) that actually can break pretty easily. It's just a little cast peice that sticks out and that is what selects your gears for you. If there is a sudden jarring movement (like what happens during shipping) and the shifter shaft is nugded, that little piece can snap off. Ill bet you this is what you're looking at.

How hard would that be to fix myself, could i just take it off my old tranny? And the people i bought it off of said that one of the spider gears could have just come off and all we would have to do is put it back on, how does that sound and how hard would that be?
