valve springs?

just wondering if anybody has tried to do valve springs. i mean i know there not something for a noob to attempt with the fact you could poss. float a valve but wondering how hard they are? thanx
 
You would just need a valve spring compressor tool, but I would take it to a machine shop and have them set the spring loads on the new springs.
 
It's fairly easy to disassemble a cylinder head. If your just replacing the springs it seems like it should be a fairly simple task. If all your are doing is replacing the springs with new ones you should be able to swap them over. If your replacing with used you may want to look into a spring pressure tester and a dial caliper to make sure everything is within spec.
 
So i am lost if i purchased NEW springs.. i have to take them to a shop ? i just cant take them out of the wrapper and start to put them in ?
 
Sure you can put them in yourself but the trick is getting a valve spring compressor that works with our heads. I believe you can get/modify one thats normally available if you want to change the springs with the head off the car but if you want to do it with the head on your probably out of luck. I believe there is a compressor that will work for this but will run you several hundred, if you don't happen to know someone who owns one. I changed my own valve springs with the head installed but happend to know someone locally who made up a custom tool. If you can find the tool to do it on the car you have to remember you also have to do something to keep the valves from dropping into the cylinders once you've removed the spring locks. Some say you can fill the cylinder with some nylon rope or what I did was rig up a compresson testor to hook up to my compressor & pressurize the cylinder whos springs your working on.

A set of 272's is no problem for stock spring with stock rev limit. I would only consider springs if you have high miles on the stocker or are increasing the rev limit (some take the stockers to 8500 without problem but I personally wouldn't risk it) You also don't need dual springs for these unless you are planning on reving to the moon.

Well unless I missed it in the pic, it doesn't look like this tool has a lock to keep the spring compressed and you have to be physically applying pressure to the tool the whole time? If this is the case Im going to say its almost going to be impossible to keep the tool compressed with one hand, leaning over the motor, trying to remove the valve locks may be possible but trying to get the valve locks back in place with one free hand in this position, good luck with that.

Looks like you've changed the springs with the head off the car, so you can position yourself where ever you need to be and also that tool holds the spring locked down, which makes it simple with the head both in or out of the car.
 
That c-clamp works awsome, 8" c-clamp and a 5/8" deep socket, put together with some superglue works wonders. :D
