hey guys im purchasing a 91 talon tsi and there are minor things i need to replace for the safety. my biggest concern though is the engine its a brand new head but needs a new bottom end theres an oil leak. the guy thats selling it had a compression test done on it and says that its either the second or third piston, im not to familiar on what he means by a new bottom end what parts does that include i had a mechanic check it out and says its just pistons and connecting rods is there anything else that also needs to be replaced please help really want the car on the road!!!!!!!

Is there any paper work stating the head is new? As far as the car i cant look at it and if your not mechanical inclined then i suggest you dont buy the car case you dont know the severaty of the problem or take it to a shop to fix it. As far as cost a good mechanic should be about 1500 for a complete bottom end install or rebuild, but you need to look around and get prices on the costs from an shop.
 
yeah i got all paper work and receipts of almost everything the car has and what was put in, like the car starts fine drives fine just a lil bit of an oil leak so i wasnt to sure what else would i need to replace other than the pistons
 
Sounds like a bad idea man. There are no shortage of 1g tsis around. If i were you i would keep looking. Unless the car will only be like 500 bucks it wont be worth it. look on the classifieds on this forum. Since compression is bad on 2 and 3 that probably means the rings are badly worn, which also probably means the cyliner walls are grooved. This means you could need to have the block at least honed and probably overbored meaning you would need oversized pistons. The oil leak would be the least of your concerns.
 
well i dont mind spending the extra cash to rebuild the bottom end if i have to i mean the car is in good shape and everything else is fine just that one problem that i would like to exactly what to do going about fixing it, and as far as shortage yes in winnipeg there arent a lot to choose from ive been looking for almost a year now
