Ok, so I'm newer to your forums but not these cars. I am however new to the slushbox version. The question is how common is it to break the ring gear on the tourque converter, and where is a good source to purchase a replacement other than IPT or the dealer? I just purchased a '91 and the previous owner was told that it had a bad cam sensor (turns out the ecu had bad caps), and a broken flexplate (I thought the ring gear was a part of the tourque converter) . Any help here would be appreciated. I hate the slushbox:mad: ..

Ring gears don't break very often, but when they do it is usually a starter related problem.

The ring gear is mounted to the flexplate, not the torque converter. You should be able to purchase one from one of your local retailers. (AutoZone, Advance/Kragen/Checker, Napa, &c)

Actually a starter misaligned can damage the ring gear( although not likely on this setup), or just plain old wear and tear. Now this will be my first A/T DSM to mess with but all the pics I've seen of this converter, the flexplate/ringgear is made with it. Could be wrong here like I said haven't opened it yet. I know full well though how "most" A/T's are setup. As far as your local pickup A.Z. ans such are not the kinds of places I want to deal with on this. I work an auto parts vendor and this thing is harder to get than you might think. Major aftermarket manufacturers like ATP, and Dorman don't offer it. I was just looking for a more performance aftermarket source, not that a flexplate can be "performance". Thanks for the input though.
