Does anyone have an idea of what i should look for when buying a 1g turbo im looking at a '91 eagle talon AWD version. The owner says everything works fine just needs new ring on the cylinder either second or third, any idea how much that would cost and if there are things i need to look out for?

Check the turbo for damage (pull the intake pipe and check the turbine for bent fins, oil leaks) other than that just check all the regular things, oil leaks, wheel bearings, ball joints, etc.

The main question concerning the rings is iwhether you are going to do the work yourself or not. If you plan on replacing the rings yourself it can be done relatively cheap. If you are going to take it to a shop you are going to be giving out alot of money.

If it needs new rings then it has bad compression im guessing. So he should have some numbers if he did a test. How does he know it needs rings?

When you check the turbo make sure you check it for shaft play. Grap the wheel inside and pull it in and out, if it moves at all its most likely going to fail. Also make sure it doesnt move side to side that much, but a little is not that bad.

Drive the car and see how it shifts, if its notchy at all. Make sure the clutch grabs good ans doesnt slip.

All these factors will lower the price you can get it at. If it has low compression I woulnt pay more the 1k for it. Just my .02

sounds like trouble to me. There is no shortage of 1g awds around. Replacing the rings means pulling the engine if you didnt know this. That is one of the largest maintenance jobs for any car. Bad rings usually means you need to at least have the cylinders honed too. If i were you i would keep looking theres plenty of fresh fish in the sea. I'm guessing the car has high milegage or was beaten on badly, this means other issues are lurking just around trhe corner
