Cost of some work?

Well i just bought my 97 GSX 127xxx and i LOVE IT!!! but now i found out it needs some work done:

Timing belt
Water pump w/ houses
Drive belts
Front Diff / transfercase
rear diff
Valve Covers / gaskets
Cam seals
Tention pullys


what other questions should i ask the mech before i commit to this?

parts are 500$
and labor is 600$

any input would be a great help! thanks

labor is free if you do it yourself.

Like Splitpi said labor is free if you do everything yourself. And if you do it yourself you will wind up with twice as much money to spend on parts. Other than that it sounds like a decent price for labor, but i would still do it myself.

Im going through the same thing you are and im going to attempt to do the project myself. It will take longer but you can use that extra $600 for some adjustable cam gears or something else.

I would guess since he just got his dsm he's probably a little new to the scene. I would recommend doing it yourself if you have any background experience with this kind of stuff. Otherwise, I would say you will probably save money by paying somebody to do it right the first time.

The other question you could ask yourself is how much do you want to spend on a 120K 7-bolt? I.e, is it cheaper in the long run to allow this motor to deteriorate and instead use the money to build up either a 6-bolt or another 7-bolt to swap in at a later date... for possibly twice or more as much as you would have paid just in maintance on the existing motor.

Its your choice... but I thought I would just through that idea out there for you.
