Is spring compressor Needed

Im doing Jic Coilovers tonight on my project 2g. Is a spring compressor needed if you do not remove the top hat bolt and just undo the 3 bolt around that one and pull the whole assembly down??

It is not required if all you are doing is pulling the old struts and replacing them with the (already assembled) JICs.
