Upgrading cams

When upgrading cams, do you NEED to upgrade your springs or can you just run stock ones?

Best thing to do is follow the manufacturers recomendation.

depends on the cams. some no, some maybe, some yes. A quick search of the cams you're interested in will tell you others' experiences....

It depends on the cam of your choice. If you use HKS 264/272 then you wouldn't need, You could get away with 272's. If you were to get 280's then I suggest stronger springs. I curently run FP 2's with stock valvetrain. Hope that helps.

At the moment i have my mind set on ffwd's DKS cams the 272/272 has anyone had any experience with cams? Do they really match up with the HKS model?

i have put many cams 272's you can put them on stock springs and retainers.

i always tell people tho if you can afford the springs and retainers i would go ahead and do it. just for safty issue's

If I did upgrade I would again go with ffwd's twin springs which I would eventually get anyway when I rebuild my head. Just looking for somthing to run in the mean time.

your biggest concern regarding springs/retainers on cams 272 or smaller is your RPMs. Don't try to rev past stock redline (or7500) and you should be fine. If you want to rev. the hell out of bigger cams and use them more in their range, you need to get springs/retainers, and also for more aggresive (comp 300, fp3, 280 etc or bigger) springs and retainers are gonna be a must. lots of people go without on the smaller setups though.

Correct, my mechanic has blown two heads on 272's. If you are going to want to use the cams right, get the upgraded springs and retainers. SS valves are also a good idea if you want to rev high. Then remember you need the right turbo to rev high.
