Turbo Making A Whine/Scream/*Confused Look*

Well...

I was driving a couple days ago, and I got bored and attempted to goose my throttle a bit so I can hear my turbo spool. It spooled up nice, until I hit aprox 5+psi *No aftermarket boost gauge* and then it starts to make a high pitched noise, almsot like a scream or a whine. Reminds me of a hot kettle, but more demonic. It's making me really worried about driving the car.

Any ideas?

not 100% sure here but your bearing could be going bad...is this the stock turbo and how old is it?

Either the turbo is dying, or you have a boost leak..........

It could be the internal heat shield on the exhaust tubine part came loose. Nobody really addresses that.

If you searched, you would have come up with many threads about this, but I'll help you out this time.

Are you blowing out blue smoke? Check for shaft play.
It's most likely time for an upgrade. My T25 went out on me and the same sound was happening. The T25 had about 1/2 in. yes inch of in-out shaft play.
Don't boost at all either. Be as easy as possible until you swap out the turbo.

If it sounds like a supercharger it is most likely shaft play. My turbo lasted about 3 weeks like this.

+1 for checking for shaft play, just take off the intake to see if it wiggles around "too much". If it seems solid I vote you have a boost leak... Do a boost leak test to check that out, it isn't too hard and it's always a good idea to make sure you're running optimal!

I did search for it, and I didn't find much on it. I have an big 16g turbo set to stock boost and a Evo 8 BOV. Where would the boost leak be, causing it to scream? I will check my turbo for shaftplay tomorrow, but when I checked it last, it was minimal. It only jiggled a bit.

Check for in and out not just side to side.

A boost leak can be from anywhere almost, do the boost leak test and youll know exactly where. Guessing would be to hard.

My shaft play was minimal in-out too. It quickly got worse and worse to the point it is now. Just because you checked a couple weeks ago or even a couple days ago doesn't mean you're alright. Check again, I doubt it's a boost leak. Check in and out. There should be NO in and out what so ever. Some side to side is ok as long as it's not substantial or touching the housing.

Mine was right at the turbo that cost a nice screaming noise, and when I blew a coupler on the cars lower intercooler pipe was barely on and it would never boost past 5 psi.
