Ok, I just put a rebuilt motor in my car. The Timing was right on but after I started it, it was very loud. So I pulled the head off and in the valve releifs on the pistons you could see where the valves hit them. Also in cylinder one, one of the valves broke off and féd up the top of the piston. Luckily I have a spare head and piston/rod combo from my old motor. I made the valve reliefs on the pistons a little bigger so this wouldnt happen again. What could have caused this? Were the lifters pumped up too much, or gummed up or what? I Turned the motor over several times with the starter to prime it before starting.
-thanks

Did you not bleed the lifters when installing them? How long after the lifters were installed in the head did you try to start the engine? Something was'nt right. Make sure that you dont have the wrong crank sprocket for the year of engine that you are using, the timing marks will be off.

well the thing is i didnt even touch the head out of the used engine I got. I just rebuilt everyhting else i slapped the head on. I guess its my mistake though. The head had to be sitting around a while then. Is that why this happened? Also I made the valve releifs on the pistons a little bit bigger. Was this a bad thing to do? For the head im putting on, What do you recommend me doing so this doesnt happen again? How do u actaully bleed the lifters?

What kind of pistons are you using? If they are stock its not really a good idea to try and remove material from them, and they will most likely still have the ability to hit the valves if the timing is off because you would have to remove a good bit of material from them to prevent it. To bleed the lifters you have to remove them and insert a small length of stiff wire into the hole in the top of the lifter and collapse it then re-install it. If the head was used then we can probably rule this idea out though as they should be bled already unless someone had the cams out of the head. That leaves me to believe that your timing was off for some reason.

It really sounds like your timing is off. Not to be a dick, but you should have looked at the head a lot closer. Better safe than sorry.
