1st talon

Hey there, Just picked picked up a n/a 1991 talon. I wanted to build up this car as the naturally aspirated way. I brought it home first things I did was new timing belt new accesory belt, oil pump, and then just a general tune up. I was just wondering of some ways I could wake up the engine this thing has, for now though the cheapest way I can until the summer. also its the 4g63 motor with 5 speed stick, in this one .

If I was you I would maintain it and leave it as is. You can spend all the money on upgrades and will get very little gains. Its like any N/A 4 cylinder motor. Unless you invest in forced induction you will be disappointed by modding it.

Save your pennys and buy a turbo version.

I agree with JayRolla, but if you are set on doing something I would suggest getting an exhaust. Its an easy and effective way of getting some power.

I agree save you money if you think you will be wanting to get rid of this car soon. If not then I would suggest I/H/E (intake, header and exhaust). The intake gives a nice sound. I went with a different motor 4g63 K motor and nitrous. It works for now.... I want boost though. Also check out nt.dsm.org they have people that did N/A buildups. I think you can somewhat pleased with the gains for now.

No you will not be impressed. Exhaust and intake will net almost zero gains on a dyno. If you want a quick car, forge the internals and add boost. Or to make it easier just have it tuned with a 100shot of nitrous.

To get more than 150whp you will need to spend lots of money, just as much as it would be to buy a turbo that lays down more power than the N/A modded will. Ive seen so many turbo n/a's dynoing between 190-230whp which is not much considering the money spent to get there.

I would buy an AWD turbo, not to mention all the n/a's are wrong wheel drive. Just as a example the fastest n/a 2g with out nitrous or forced induction runs a mid 14 and dynoed 175whp. This is a very high number for no power adders. Now a 1g Turbo dynos about 175whp stock. So what does that tell you.

HMM, aslo been hearing that the timing belts like to go on these things, should this car be a lot more reliable being a non turbo car, what else do I have to worry about.

Also if I were to change the exhaust, what would give me a sort of throaty sound, not buzzy, and not to loud.

would changing the throttle body and intake do anything ?

You have to consider the factors that this user mitght be dealing with.
1. He may not be able to afford insurance on a Turbo/AWD car
2. He may not have funds to deal with the problems that come with Turbo cars, especially DSM's.

NA 1g's are a different platform than a 2g 420a motor. Ive seen them be good AutoX cars and with a little upgrades they can do some damage around the course.
Of course we all know that Forced induction helps with numbers, but thats why we all cannot drive DD 12 sec. cars.
Let him do what he wants and let him learn at his own pace.

The exhaust sound will depend on what exhaust you get. Thermal has a nice throaty sound.

Hmm maybe I should tell you the goals with the car.

The plan was just to have a decent powered good looking car. I've always loved the looks of them this one was cheap has a perfect interior, which I love on these cars. All I wanted to do was lower the car put on some black wheels with a polished lip ( the cars black) and do some work to the engine so Its not slow as balls, As I will be eventually getting a car for speed.

I didnt want the problems the turbo cars come with, I wanted a dsm but not one that I would always be fixing.

So basically Im just asking for ways to make the engine a pretty strong one. Who knows maybe in the future when I want more out of the car Ill stroke it to a 2.1 and turbo the car. But for now I just want a nice daily driver.

Sounds like a plan. You should post some pics after you lower it and get your rims. I always liked the look of a black car with black rims. For the power gains simple stuff will work if this just going to be a cruiser with a little bit of balls to it.

I was thinking of somthing like those for wheels. Whats the bolt pattern on the talons anyway ?

Those rims are nice.
Should look real good on a lowered black car.

Just a thought... If a 4g63 is a 4g63 then maybe some cams? I mean I know turbo cams in a N/A won't just give him power, but what if he had some adjustable gears to dial in more overlap? along with the good 'ol safc and some high octane of course. Also pacesetter makes a header for N/As, right?
P.S. I know this is too much money that he could spend on a turbo, but just for the discussion's sake.....
