I was looking into buying some hks cam gears and timing belt. my cams are fine but i just love the way the hks ones look and im dressing my engine right now. I see cars like supras driving around without the timing cover so is it a bad idea or not, and if it is a bad idea to take the timing cover off, then why? if its a bad idea then right now these parts would be a waste of money but i wanted to make sure because they put the cover on for a reason.

I think you just answered your own question. Simply, yes it's a bad idea to remove the cam gear cover, especially for a daily driver. You don't want debris and stuff to get in there, so that's why most sensible people leave the cover on.

If you really want to go for the looks, fab up a custom clear cover.

If you search, there was a thread about this see-thru cover back a few months ago, with photos and everything.

Personally, I wouldn't buy new cam gears just for the looks alone. And I hope you have enough brains that you wouldn't do so either.

EDIT: Oh yeah, "Hello" from one local New England DSMer to another. :)

Take it from someone that made this mistake. LEAVE THE COVER ON. I had mine off and a friend acidentally left a rag in the engie compartment so on the firtst outing of my car I ended up towing it home and repalcing the CAS and the crank angle sensor. I got lucky and it only jumped one tooth a few more teeth and it could have been much worse. Its just better safe than sorry. (at least my buddy paid for the sensors:thumb: )

Thanks guys, i guess Ill leave the cams alone then. Also DSMunknown, Hello back. Always good to see other local DSMers
