Just bought a Evo GT Mani and the studs that stick out of the head seem like they are not long enough to accompany the thicker mani. I can get a screw on but I don't have much thread to work with. Should I get longer studs?

Actually I'm having my mechanic do the work. He told me he's afraid to put it on in fear of stripping the threads on the head.

Yes that is a problem, it can be hard to take them out. They must have been replaced or or all broke off or something. The evo mani is pretty much the same design as the OEM. Odd problem.

The evo GT, you are talking about the turbochargers.com one arent you? Not the EVo 3 right? I run the Evo GT (turbochargers.com) manifold and yes it has a thicker flange, but still should fit. Ive been running mine for a year or so and I havent had any problem.

I just installed one on my head today. It fit perfectly, I did get stainless studs with the copper bolts from ssstuds.com (don't type sstuds.com... unless you are into that sort of thing ;) ) but they are the same length as stock.

I agree. I just installed a GT manifold last week and while it does ahve a thicker flange, I had no problems bolting it on.
Maybe your mechanic is just eyeballing it? Has he even tried to install it before he just said he doesn't think he can?

Maybe you can do the work yourself. 14mm and 17mm wrenches and a torque wrench should be all you need, IIRC :thumb:

Yes its the GT Mani If I had my own garage I could probally do the work. It's not fun doing the work on the street in the winter. Also on the right side there is some kind of bracket, I think it's for the power steering thats in the way.

oh! I figured it out!
I believe 1g's need to trim a corner on manifolds designed for use on 2g's. Maybe thats why it doesn fit?
Hang on, I'll try to dig up a link.

I believe this is the correct answer that you need to grind a small section of the right hand corner to get the clearance you need. Same for putting a 2G stocker onto a 1G head if I am not mistaken.

But I cannot speak from knowledge as I have not done this... but it is my understanding.

He's probably right on the money with this, most other mani's will need this mod to fit on the 1g's. While I don't have the GT mani I do have the origional SBR mani that the GT seems to be a knock off of & it to has the thicker then stock mounting flange. While obviously the studs don't come through quite as much there is defently enough thread there to install the mani. I still run the engine hoise bracket which adds more thickness (ie less threads to install on) & still had no issues torqueing them down to spec.

Yep thanks guys for the info and everything. Got it on there good with some minor grinding etc etc. Drove it around for a little but didnt feel that much difference. Spool up time seems to be about the same as with the stock one.

Can you please fill out your vehicle profile some more?

Assuming you're using the stock 14b, the turbine inlet of that turbo is smaller than the outlet of the GT manifold. This creates backpressure and turbulence. It drives fine, as I'm currently doing with my T-25, but definitely no increase in performance until those outlets and inlets are port matched. :thumb:

Glad you got it working.

Yes I have the stock 14b, Dejon super big SMIC and piping, ported TB, 2.5 Monza exhaust and 255lph fuel pump. I didnt think the outlet and inlet size would be that great that it would cause a problem. Will I notice a decrease in performance under 18psi of boost?

Yea, my friend had to do this on his 1g to make it fit but mine bolted up perfectly, him and I have both been running this manifold for almost a year now with no problems. It is a very good manifold for the price, you just cant beat it.
