Hey guys, my car is misfiring and I wanna make sure what is exactly wrong with it and was wondering if the good people of dsmtuners.com can help :D:

Symptoms: The car backfired, you can hear the motor sounding like a subaru and feel it rumble a bit, definitely feel the loss of power, it idle surges a bit and the check engine light went on.

After I checked it with ODB II scan tool, it threw out the "multiple cylinders misfiring" code. So I checked my spark plugs and saw that spark plug in cylinder 3 was chipped. So, I replaced all 4 and cleared the codes. I test drove it and seemed back to normal then after a while it came back, except the backfiring was gone and after I rev it past 3k RPM, the power would come back. I keep on checking the plugs by taking them out, inspecting them then putting them back in. The car would drive normal for a while then after about 15 minutes of driving, misfire would come back.

The plugs aren't fouled or anything, the new ones and the old, I am thinking about the spark plug wires are faulty/bad. Do you guys have any suggestions? Any reply is appreciated except the bad. THANKS for reading!

Sounds just like what mine is doing. Right between 2500 and 3000 my car falls on its face, but right after 3000 it smooths out and we're off. I would like to hear the solution to your problem. I replace the plugs and wires repeatedly, but with no luck. Also replaced the fuel filter. All of these things only seemed to help for a minute.

If you replaced the plugs (which should be damaged, even tip being broken) and still hasnt fixed your problem.. you might be in trouble. Usually this is some internal damage, caused by detonation.

DO A COMPRESSION TEST.

Sorry to say it, but it might call for a rebuild.

Agree, do a compression test. Sorry to say but is possible you have 0 compression on one of the cylinders and might be time to rebuild or find a new motor.

My car misfired when i accelerated made a pop noise, i just replaced with NGK plugs and now it runs perfect. Also its not subaru's that misfire its the srt-4's..LOL :thumb: :dsm:

I had the same problem, random misfire all the time. I replaced the CAS not crank angle sensor and the problem went away for good

cam angle sensor. i replaced mine on my 95 n/t. its a little plastic piece that weighs like .1 pounds. ohh and if you buy a new one, it will come with a rubber band looking thing, dont throw that away thinking you dont need it, put it around the inner groove of the cas. anyways, after replacing that i still have the problem you describe, so i got a crank angle sensor. i tried putting it in the other day but the old one wouldnt come out and i didnt wanna break it off inside the block, so i gave up, but im gonna try tomarrow and ill keep you updated.

My brother's car is doing the exact same thing. He has 0 compression in cyl. 2. I guess it's time for a rebuild. He's in the midst of taking the head off now...

Good luck.

It seems like its ALWAYS that number two cylinder. And they usually chunk an exhaust valve in it. Any updates? I have'nt pulled mine apart yet, I'm still driving it.

I am having this problem again...

After 2k miles, I am having the same problem this all happened after a full tank of gas.

Not sure if it was a coincedence but could running anything lower than 91 octane cause a bad misfire?

I resolved the issue in the past by changing the plugs, wires back to stock, drained my gas all the way until the gas light lit up and car ran smooth for 2k miles

1k miles ago, I swapped my magnecores back in, but after 1k later a full tank of gas
CEL popped back up
Car is misfiring again

Swapping in the stock wires has made the rough subuaru sound much quieter and at times car would idle perferctlly and run smooth over 3k but would fall on its face again.

Any help or updates appreciated on this thread.

At the time you had the first problem I was following this thread because your problem was the exact same as mine. After changing the sparkplug wires to some regular wires from advance auto parts and I started using the recommended plug for our cars. I was using some special iridium plugs v spark shit. I switched to the NGK plugs and have been raping my car for about 8,000 miles and have not had the problem again. I think it is about time for new plugs again.

I had the similar symptoms. My car LITERALLY sounded like a WRX got a CEL. Checked the code with a logger and it said "Injector Circuit Failure" Turns out one of my injectors jarred loose with a mean AWD launch (clip was missing). Pushed back in and immedately the car went back to normal, I cleared the code and haven't had the same issue since.

So it would seem, this symptom has many resolutions.

thats what i will be changing next...

its just hard to believe that they are fouled again after less than 3k

Had to figure out what CEL meant. But yes about every 2000 miles i get the CEL, I disconnect my battery and it goes away for another 2,000 miles. That starting happening after cold air intake and 3 in exaust, (no cat). My car runs very nice, even with the CEL shining in my face. That reminds me, time to unplug the battery again.

You sound like you know your stuff, which is why I don't really think you would have this problem and not notice. But maybe? When I first got this car, I couldn't keep plugs from fouling and then this white smoke starting coming out the exhaust at idle. The spark plugs kept fouling before the white smoke, I took it to the dealer to get the white smoke taken care of, and it wound up being my lash adjusters. I had all the lash adjusters replaced and that solved the white smoke and the spark plugs fouling. I guess it turns out the lash adjusters were burnt up and the car was running extremely rich, which was fouling the plugs. I really hope this helps you with your problem. Oh yeah lash adjusters (valves) = $1400, but that was the dealership putting them in for me.

You must have been posting this as I was typing my reply. Yes, Iridium plugs are VERY bad for forced induced cars. The Iridium electrode actually becomes a hot spot.

You are getting this because of you're second O2 sensor is no longer plugged in.

I hooked the o2 sensor back up after i installed the exhaust, there was a threaded hole in the new exhaust for it. But what I went through getting it out........Is there a chance that I broke the o2 sensor?? I beat the living hell out of it with a pipe wrench and the biggest hammer i could swing while laying under my car.
