ok, im new to DSM but im a pretty seasoned mechanic. here's teh beef: i traded this car for an s13 convertible..the previous owner couldnt figure out the linkages as he put a new transmission in it. that was as simple as triming down the lock nut, anyway, i wont get into that as its not the problem. so he put this new trans in and couldnt figure it out and ended up wanting to dump it off...so we traded. he says the car was running when he parked it and did the trans swap. well, it doesnt start. when i got it, the plugs were fouled, the plug wires were missing connectors that go into the coil and the coil was cracked on teh 4-1 cyl's coil. i replaced teh plugs (iridium, expensive bastards), coil packs and wires. no fire. i checked for fuel and i have fuel coming into the line, i got the motor into TDC and the top end all lines up to my timing is good, i have spark, i checked compression, good, good, good...im dying here. any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated. thanks in advance

You say you have compression and spark and fuel coming into the lines but are you sure its coming out of the injectors? Oh and those iridium are junk for our cars you should of saved your money and just bought ngk's.

well, shit on teh plugs i guess...oh well. umm, not sure about voltage to the fuel injectors but after about a 1/2 hr of dicking with it last night i finally got it to fire however it ran like crap.. serious missfire and bad idle. i managed to get the thing to idle long enough to check the timing with a timing light and it was good, so i guess i can rule out injectors now. oh, where IS this fuse at? my fuse cover box is missing.. oh yea, i have proper vacuum coming to the FPR, i didnt have a guage so i couldnt get any reading of how much pressure i had on the line or how much pressure i had going to the regulator, but there's plenty...

another thing i noticed is that there was no difference with or without teh MAF hooked up..it would idle the same and rev up the same (gutless). any ideas on this? perhaps someone knows what pins to apply voltage to and measure output voltage? or is this normal?

thanks again!

on a side note, i got frustrated yesterday and took a short lunch break and came across this video and was suddenly inspired again :D

73,792 members and no one has a clue? this factory service is a peice of crap. it gives little to no detail on how to bench test sensors or really much of anything specific. some help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

he he

anything guys?! id like to get this thing rolling.

thanks

Well to be honest I have no idea to check any of the sensors but I thought I might get some info out of yea. Nothing pisses me off more than a thread that has a real problem and no on can even post on. Now if you were wondering what piece of crap to get off E-bay you would have too many replies to know what to do with. (sorry for the rant long day) First lets start with your vehicle profile. What is your car exactly 1G, 2G? Turbo N/A. The car has been sitting for a while have you drained the gas? I had the same thing happen when I got my dsm running about a month ago it ran like crap and took for ever to start due to bad gas. Does the car still start, or does it take some effort?

try some drygas. Get a diode light and check your pulses at each injector. After that, since you said you are a mechanic, use a smoke machine and check the intake for leaks or pressuize it. If the car runs better without the mass air plugged in, sometimes you are able to save the money and clean the mas off the car with brake clean and CAREFUL COMPRESSED air, sometimes not. Try these things first then report back. Sorry about the Iridium plugs, I know they are pushing the pretty hard at the part stores! It took me 10 minutes to convice the guy that I needed 1.44 a piece BPR8ES's.

yay, responses! LOL

shaun: sorry, i failed to list what the car was, i thought i had done that. its a 92 gsx. 1g awd turbo i guess. 4g63..but im sure u already knew all that ;) as far as a manual, i have a proper mitsubishi factory service manual. it sucks. no diagnostic flowcharts, no bench testing procedures on parts...nothing. its worthless. i put fresh fuel into teh tank before i started monkeying with it just to save face. the car was sitting for a while, but not to long. maybe a few months. and it will start, it just takes about a half hr and a few charges of the battery.

gsx_spider: im not a car mechanic by trade, but ive been wrenching since i could walk. ill give teh diode light a go..i HAVE ohmed out the injectors and got good results. any links with info on how to check the pulses with a diode light? i have already checked for vacuum leaks. i had two when i got the car but they have since been fixed. the MAF is clean as. as far as teh iridiums go, ive never personally tried them on any of my cars (ive got a grip of cars fyi) and thought id give them a go.

i dont suppose either of you would have a procedure on how to apply 12v to the MAF and measure output voltages do you? ie, where to apply voltage adn what my output voltage range is. all ive gotten off the different forums is just to replace the bloody thing and im not one ot just toss parts at a car unless i diagnos a problem.

thanks for the replies guys!

I'm moving at the end of the month and can't be bothered dealing with this car anymore. its for sale. 800obo in san diego. it has a freshly rebuilt head, GREAT compression, leather seats, shortened shifter, new transmission, recent tune up (listed above), under 100k on the clock and tinted windows. oh yea, its a gsx so turbo/awd.

shoot me an email at [email protected] if you're interested.

oh yea, the ECU was shot out. looks like someone tried to replace the caps and burnt the board all to hell.
