Do I need to replace the whole cable or is there any other fix?

Today is the most importand day when I need my DSM working and now I guess I am gonna have to take a bus.

I had the same problem with mine. I took a black ziptie to keep it from poping out, and it has held with no problem.

you can use a ziptie, it will hold it...take a few extra just in case. I've done the zip tie method and it worked until i got around to changing the cables.

Look, I just had mine do that a little while back, and yeah, you wont be able to get a quick fix with those... The D33a is the AWD turbo models, and the D32A is the FWD Turbo models, and they both use the same cables. Take your cables with if you go to a salvage yard, just to double check.... Brand new they are 120 bucks retail, but from a salvage lot, 20 to 80 bucks... The correct term for them is the selector cable and the shift cable, CAPS has like 3 different terms for them, but either way, one cable lets you "Select" the gear you want and one actually "Shifts" into gear. I also recommend getting the brass end washers and the Symborski shift kit with your new cables... It will shift like a hot knife through butter... trust me... I am posting a pic with what happened to mine... and its not pretty...

Can someone describe to me what exactly is wrong with what's in the picture?

OK thanks guys! Zipties didn't work...that rubber tubbing thing is gone and it will always slide off...
Will go and get a new one. Is it hard to replace?

Same thing happened to mine - and I FOOLISHLY replaced them with a used set.. Do yourself a favor and order brand new ones - you will thank me later.

Installing them is a PITA.. If I knew the used set would fail less than a year later I would have went new in the first place.

Get new!

I got a new cables from Mitsubishi for $96.80 Part# MD770982

I want to replace them myself. Any tips before I start?

Its really Not that hard.

I always smash up my hands pulling out the retainer clips, but then again, I use whatever tool is nearest me to try and pull them out.

The HARDEST part of the swap will be putting the rubber grommet - metal plate back in the firewall, that was a B*TCH, trying to get the nuts and stuff on, and get it in right.

might be easier on you, if you pullout the radio, ecu and all that garb to get a better view,
I did it just reaching in from the sides of the floorboards.

just make sure you make a mental note, destinguish Right from left hand cables, mabye write on the old ones and compare? Im not sure how they are going to come from the factory, so just make sure you match them up with the old ones and get them in the right sides.

and when your reinstalling, I think its best to work from the inside out.

except for the Hold down just after the shifter junk, youll want to save that for after you get it bolted into the firewall.

You should go ahead and pull out the console, and radio and ecu and all that.... youll thank yourself.

I always feltl like the angle of the cables were all wrong. but thats just how it looks.

you may need to make minor adjustments on the cable ends (inside car) just check them against the old ones and get them as close as possible.

yeah man the cables have to go at a really sharp angle it almost seems unnatural when you're putting them in... you almost definetly need someone to hold the engine-bay side of them up in the air so that you can bolt them down...

Thanks guys!

It was very easy to do. I didn't pull out the radio or ECU, just the side panels and center console and that gave me a good acces to a firewall. Took me a minute or two to pull the cotter pins out but everything else went OK.

Now I am just waiting for new underhood symborski bearings. I tried to reuse the old ones but its almost impossible to push them out without breaking them.

Glad it worked out well.

and Thanks for the followup, most members forget to do this.

We take such pride in helping others here we NEED TO KNOW that it worked out for you.

What is that hose for?

Like you see on that pic it should go under the shift cables but when I was installing mine I did not pay attention to it and now it goes above it :( Its kinda pressing shift cables down and I am worried about it.

Would it be easier to disconnect that hose and then reinstall it in right location or to reinstall shift cables again?

I'm not completely familiar with the 4g63 setup but judging by the fittings crimped on I'm assuming it's an A/C line. That said, no disconnecting it would be more of a hassle than re routing the shift cables.

yea, thats an ac line.

On that car i think i disconnected it completley. but you should need to remove it i wouldnt think.

you said it was pressing the cables down, you could either move it uptop? or, does it shift correctly like it is? if you disconnect that hose you will depressureize your ac coolant, dont breathe that stuff. and if your gonna do it, make sure no one sees you do it, illegal to just dump that stuff into the atmosphere i think.
