can too much oil be a bad thing?

as the title states.
i recently topped up my engine oil, and now its reading about 1/8th of a inch above the top notch on the dipstick. the car had been at operating temp, then i checked it about 30 min later. the valve cover was a little warm to the touch. i just was woundering if too much oil can cause anything sort of damage? i have a kind of a long drive coming up, about 120miles, will too much oil cause too much oil pressure at sustained higher rpm?(ex. 3000rpm crusing speed)
or will it effect normal street driving?
after i topped it up and drove home it felt fine... i assume all is well?
sorry for such a newbish question, i never thought of this before.
thanks !

If I were you I would let it drip a little out so it is below the line at least may be even 1/4 of the way below the line (3/4 up from low line). I had to much oil in my car and the dipstick would shoot out spraying oil everywhere when I floored the car. I also know thatt like the previous person said it's actually bad when you have to much.

Too much oil is bad, but that amount won't matter. Panic later.

Overfill by the likes of a quart will bring the oil level high enough for the crank to run in it (a normal fill has the crank running in clear air), which will lead to aeration- foamy oil is like no oil, as bubbles destroy oil pressure and take up the spaces that should contain oil. In very extreme cases, seals can be forced out by excess oil.

An eighth-inch on the stick can safely be ignored.

A good running motor will blow out a dip stick with a shriveled hard rubber seal
A dead motor (lots of blow by, busted pistons) will blow out a good dipstick
A 1/2 dead motor will blow out a 1/2 dead dip stick

Agreed!!

Thats what I was reading around becuase didn't think that it was over by much and shouldn't have an effect. Once I drained the excess out the problem stopped. I don't know why that caused the dipstick to blow. Oh, and I had just bought a new dipstick like two weeks before that happened so I know it wasn't the rubber. Weird.

sweet, thank you for the replies. i guess i'll be ok, but im going home for x mas so ill drain out a tad when i get there.
fewf !
i didn't think that one quart would fill it up so much, i had it just above the bottom notch, so i figured top er' up til the next oil change, which isn't far away, and it'll be all good.
ah well, looks like some will come out anyhow cause i'm picky.
thanks again !

When I race my car I always try to put a 1/8" more then full, (when your constanly at high RPM more oil stays in the top end) plus its extra insurance for the hard left hand turns.

But anything over a 1/8 for street should be fixed, unless your cars leaks really bad.
