Montreal,
Hi guys,

My first post here, so please indulge me :)

I just bought this awesome '97 Eclipse GS-T (pics to come soon!) and it has a blown engine, so I'm looking to replace it. I did a bit of research and know what engines are available to me, but basically it boils down to this:

The previous owner told me that a 1st gen engine would be a better fit. It's more solid and there is no need to port the heads and so on, but it does require a bit of work to make it fit. Now correct me if I'm wrong but 1st gen turbo models were also 4G63T engines.

So I turn to you guys now. Which engine would he be referring to? And is this something that is worth it? If not, I guess I'll just go straight to the point: What IS the best engine for a 2nd gen turbo eclipse? I'm looking to make 300hp and possibly close to 400hp in the future.

Thanks all!

You're going to need a 6-bolt engine. They're not too hard to come by. Being that you're in Montreal, you should check out the Canadian DSM board for parts. It may be a bit easier to get something locally (we have a lot of DSMers in Montreal). Here's the link:

As far as the engine swap is concerned, here is the step-by-step manual to follow: http://www.magnusmotorsports.com/tech/1gina2g.pdf

Enjoy.

Thanks guys.

Should I even bother to buy a certified engine from Mitsubishi directly? (that would include a warranty)

You can buy a rebuilt motor 6 bolt or a low mileage 6 bolt on ebay for a decent price. Some come with warranties as well, and the mechanic that puts the motor in should be able to back up their work. I bought a completly rebuilt 6 bolt from Ebay for around 1600 and it comes with a year warranty. Try looking around first before you take it to the dealer since they dealership will charge you way more than other places.

Cool. Yeah I tried ebay and there are a couple of decent 6 bolt engines (freight must be awful though!).

Finally, how much should I expect for the labour, just so I don't get screwed over.... ?

i'd buy from dsmers on the forums before i look on ebay. Dsmtalk.com as well as here have extensive classifieds sections. And yes definitely buy a 1st gen "6 bolt" engine.

90-92.5 = 6 bolt
92.5-94 = 7 bolt

So be careful when buying, don't just look for a 1st gen engine, look specifically for a 6 bolt. 6 bolt refers to the number of bolts on the flywheel/crank. The 2gs are 7 bolts like the later 1gs.

A 6 bolt swap can go as high as $800. I personally did my own swap and i learned a ton as well as saving a ton of $.
